Brickner Wins NCAA Outdoor Hammer Throw Title

Melanie Brickner won the hammer throw and placed third in the shot put, and Jecel (Gerner) Klotz claimed her fourth All-America award in the shot put, to help propel UW-Oshkosh to a seventh-place finish at the NCAA Division III Women's Outdoor Championship held May 21-23 in Canton, N.Y.

UW-Oshkosh, which has won nine outdoor titles, had placed in the top two in the country from 2009-14.

UW-La Crosse won this year's championship with 73 points. UW-Eau Claire was the runner-up with 43 points, followed by Washington University (Mo.) in third place with 39 points, Illinois Wesleyan University in fourth with 38 and Massachusetts Institute of Technology in fifth with 32.

Brickner's hammer throw distance of 192-7 not only bested the field of 22 competitors, it established a stadium record at Merrick-Pinkard Track & Field Complex. It was Brickner's first Division III outdoor crown and her second All-America showing in the hammer throw after finishing fourth last year. Brickner added her second All-America performance of the meet with a third-place effort of 46-11 3/4 in the shot put.

Klotz was the runner-up in the shot put with a distance of 48-10. Cherae Reeves from Concordia College (Minn.) had a toss of 49-3 1/2 to edge out the Titans dup of Klotz and Brickner. Klotz won Division III outdoor shot put titles in 2011 and 2014 and finished second during her freshman season in 2010.

Kylee Verhasselt picked up her second career All-America accolade in the 800-meter run. She crossed the finish line in sixth place with time of 2:10.94 after a runner-up performance last year.

Individual Titans also competing at the Division III Championship were Kasey Ederer in the high jump, Emily Reichenberger in the 200-meter dash and Taylor Sherry in both the 100-meter hurdles and the heptathlon.

Ederer finished 19th in the preliminaries with a height of 5-2 1/2. Reichenberger was 17th in the preliminary round with a time of 25.32. Sherry placed 10th in the heptathlon with 4,669 points and 18th in the 100-meter hurdle preliminaries with a time of 15.29.

UW-Oshkosh was also represented by the 400-meter relay team of Reichenberger, Samantha Blue, Cassandra Hemmen and Ashley Holicek and the 1,600-meter relay squad of Sherry, Verhasselt, Alesha Malueg and Caitlyn McCormick. Both the 400- (47.73) and 1,600-meter (3:50.91) relay teams placed 12th in the preliminary round.
