Cazzola, Strupp Receive Academic All-America Awards

Christy Cazzola and Breanna Strupp were voted Academic All-Americans for their superb performance during the past year. The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) selected 46 women for its 2012-13 NCAA Division III Cross Country/Track & Field Team.

Both Cazzola and Strupp are majoring in education. Cazzola, a first-team pick, owns a 3.34 cumulative grade-point average. Strupp (3.65 GPA) received a spot on the second team.

Cazzola earned seven national titles in the past seven months while receiving National Athlete of the Year for cross country, indoor track and outdoor track.

During the cross country season, Cazzola was victorious at the WIAC, Midwest Regional and NCAA Division III championships. She defeated 276 runners to win the 6,000-meter national meet (20:53) on Nov. 17.

Cazzola's indoor track season featured all-time records in four events. She set NCAA Division III standards in the 800-meter (2:05.76), mile (4:43.13) and 5,000-meter (16:21.49) runs, along with the distance medley relay (11:32.24). At the national championship, Cazzola brought home titles in the mile, 5,000-meter run and distance medley relay.

Outdoors, Cazzola won three individual crowns at the NCAA Division III Championship on May 25. In a span of three hours, she took the 800 with a time of 2:05.93, the 1,500 at 4:17.22 and the 5,000 at 16:31.17. During June, Cazzola broke the Division III record with her 800-meter time of 2:04.08 at the USA Track & Field Championships.

Strupp only competed during the indoor track & field season, but she helped the Titans win a national title. At the NCAA Division III Championship, Strupp took first place in the shot put with throw of 51-6.25. She also was named National Athlete of the Week (Feb. 18) and won the shot put title at the WIAC Championship.

UW-Eau Claire's Ashlyn Mauer and Erin Schoenfelder also were named to the Academic All-America Team.

To be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, a student-athlete must maintain a GPA of 3.30, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at her current institution and be nominated by her sports information director.

Since the inception of the CoSIDA Academic All-America Program in 1952, 49 UW-Oshkosh student-athletes have combined to total a WIAC-best 68 Academic All-America awards.
