Titans Sprint Past Maroons In Season Opener

UW-Oshkosh won 10 women's track & field events to defeat the University of Chicago, 79-59, on Saturday (Jan. 12) in Chicago, Ill.

Three of those victories came on the short track. Cassandra Hemmen (So. • Appleton) started things off by winning the 55-meter dash in 7.51. Teammates Samantha Blue (So. • Kimberly) and Ashley Holicek (Fr. • Sussex) were right behind in second (7.55) and third place (7.61), respectively.

Holicek prevailed in the 200-meter dash with a 26.87. Megan Geldernick (So. • Wauconda, Ill.) then took first in the 55-meter hurdles at 8.88.

UW-Oshkosh won the 1,600-meter relay with a time of 4:12.77.

The remaining six wins came in the field. Kasey Ederer (Fr. • Kaukauna) took the high jump at 5-1.75 and Claire Pohlman (Jr. • Sun Prairie) topped the triple jump at 36-7.5. Melanie Brickner (So. • Marathon) added a weight throw triumph with her 54-7.5, as did VeiJzahn Knight (Fr. • Oshkosh) with a long jump of 17-9 and Stefanie Weber (So. • Burlington) with a pole vault of 9-11.75.

In the shot put, Abby Martin (Jr. • Chilton) claimed the title with a throw of 43-9. Brickner followed in second place at 42-4 and Heather Clankie (Fr. • Brodhead) third at 39-2.5.

Second-place results came from Blue in the long jump at 16-9.75, Hemmen in the 200-meter dash at 26.98 and Martin in the weight throw at 48-3.5.

UW-Oshkosh competes at the Cardinal Opener on Friday (Jan. 18) in Naperville, Ill.
