Titans Regain Ownership Of WIAC Women's Cross Country Title

Kylee Verhasselt, Hannah Kuenzi and Danica Harrison finished in the top nine to lead UW-Oshkosh to the title at the WIAC Women's Cross Country Championship held Saturday (Oct. 31) at the Lake Breeze Golf Club in Winneconne.

UW-Oshkosh scored 47 points to edge two-time defending champion UW-La Crosse's total of 51. It was the event's closest finish since 2010.

With the victory, UW-Oshkosh extended its collection of WIAC-record titles to 16. The championship was the first for the Titans since 2000, when UW-Oshkosh concluded its run of 15 consecutive titles.

UW-Eau Claire placed third at the meet with 72 points, while UW-Stout finished fourth with 91, UW-Platteville fifth with 99, UW-Stevens Point sixth with 187, UW-Whitewater seventh with 187 and UW-River Falls eighth with 230.

UW-La Crosse entered the championship ranked 13th in the NCAA Division III by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, while UW-Eau Claire listed 23rd and UW-Oshkosh 29th.

Verhasselt, the meet's top returning runner, paced the Titans with a third-place time of 22:23 on the 6,000-meter course. Kuenzi finished seventh with a time of 22:40 and Danica Harrison ninth in 22:49.

Rounding out UW-Oshkosh's point-scoring runners were Erica Munyan and Leah Rendflesh. Munyan placed 13th with a time of 22:59 and Rendflesh 15th in 23:04.

UW-Eau Claire's Lucy Ramquist won the individual title after besting the 94-runner field with a time of 21:57. She also finished 11th in 2011, 16th in 2013 and fifth in 2014.

UW-Stout's Kathleen Thorn finished second with a time of 22:07, while UW-Eau Claire's Clara Williamson placed fourth in 22:28 and UW-La Crosse's Rebecca Voss fifth in 22:29.

Also joining the UW-Oshkosh trio in the top 10 individuals were UW-La Crosse's Kaitlyn McDaniel in sixth with a time of 22:37, UW-Platteville's Chelsey Heiden eighth in 22:43 and UW-La Crosse's Elizabeth Frick 10th in 22:51.

UW-Oshkosh also had Isabella Tremonti finish 37th in 24:03, Kristen Linzmeier 39th in 24:05, Cheyenne Moore 45th in 24:17, Courtney Holland 52nd in 24:27, Rhea Fiorita 56th in 24:44, Hannah Thorn 75th in 25:45 and Jessica Stamn 90th in 27:14.

The top seven runners from the meet earned All-WIAC first team recognition, while runners placing eight through 14 capture All-WIAC second team accolades. Individuals finishing 15 through 20 receive honorable mention status.

The Titans compete next at the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional on Nov. 14 in Rock Island, Ill.
