Cazzola To Run For Third Straight WIAC Title

Christy Cazzola (Sr. • Kaukauna) can become the first person to win three straight individual titles when UW-Oshkosh runs at the WIAC Women's Cross Country Championship on Saturday (Oct. 27) in Cuba City.

The 35th annual competition begins at 1 p.m. on the 6,000-meter Cole Acres Golf Course.

Cazzola, a two-time NCAA Division III All-American, won the last two conference races with times of 22:15 in 2010 and 21:27 in 2011. UW-Oshkosh's Tiffany Speckman is the only other woman with three WIAC titles (1994, 1996, 1997).

Expected to challenge Cazzola for the individual crown are Ashlyn Mauer and Madi Sawyer of UW-Eau Claire, Katie Rydeen of UW-River Falls, Julia Colling of UW-Stevens Point, Katie Hicks of UW-Stout and Alyssa Duncan of UW-Whitewater.

UW-Eau Claire seeks its sixth straight WIAC team championship after winning last year's meet with 41 points. UW-Stevens Point finished second with 94 points, while 2006 champion UW-La Crosse placed third with 103, UW-Oshkosh fourth with 107 and UW-Stout fifth with 124.

This season, UW-Eau Claire is ranked 10th in the NCAA Division III by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association and UW-Oshkosh 29th.

UW-Oshkosh's McKenzie Kelly (Sr. • New Richmond) is competing at her fourth WIAC Championship. She finished 13th at the event last year, 20th in 2010 and 11th in 2009.

Other Titans returning from last year's meet are Allie DeBaker (Jr. • Green Bay), Morgan Engelhart (Jr. • Oregon), Kelsey Sweeney (Sr. • Verona), Alexandria Mahoney (So. • Spring Green) and Kristin Stockheimer (Sr. • West Salem). DeBaker finished 31st, while Engelhart placed 35th, Sweeney 45th, Mahoney 71st and Stockheimer 80th.

Rounding out UW-Oshkosh's list of participants are Taylor Bauer (Fr. • Fort Atkinson), Rhea Fiorita (Fr. • Burlington), Danica Harrison (Fr. • Arpin), Sonny Jenkins (So. • Manton, Mich.) and Kendal Wormuth (Fr. • Wittenberg).

The top seven finishers receive All-WIAC first team recognition, while runners placing eighth through 14th earn All-WIAC second team accolades.
