Titans Capture Midwest Open Title

The UW-Oshkosh women's cross country team was impressive as it opened the 2010 season with a first-place finish at the Midwest Open held Saturday (Sept. 11) in Somers.

UW-Oshkosh, ranked 15th in the NCAA Division III by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, won the nine-team meet with 26 points. The Titans arrived at their team score by having five of the top 10 individual performers.

NCAA Division II UW-Parkside finished second to UW-Oshkosh in the team standings with 51 points, while NCAA Division I Loyola University (Ill.) placed third with 80 and NCAA Division I UW-Milwaukee fourth with 85.

UW-Oshkosh was led by the second-place finish of Christy Cazzola (So. • Kaukauna). Cazzola, who returned to the Titans this season after sitting out the 2009 campaign, completed the 5,000-meter course in a time of 18:07.

A total of 96 runners finished the race, with Elise Sigg of UW-Milwaukee posting a winning time of 17:49. Anna Weber, running unattached, placed third in 18:21, while Hope Christie of UW-Parkside finished fourth in 18:22 and Jennifer Piskor (Sr. • Eagan, Minn.) of UW-Oshkosh fifth in 18:57.

Also figuring in UW-Oshkosh's team scoring were Brittany Haas (Sr. • St. Charles, Ill.), Cassie Petersen (Sr. • Marinette) and Allison Gehl (Sr. • Sherwood). Haas placed sixth with a time of 19:05, while Petersen finished seventh in 19:06 and Gehl 10th in 19:22.

Other UW-Oshkosh runners placing in the top 50 were McKenzie Kelly (So. • New Richmond), Samantha Helgesen (Jr. • Bristol), Janelle Brooks (Jr. • Janesville), Heather Bassett (Sr. • Minocqua), Allie DeBaker (Fr. • Green Bay) and Rachel Wells (Fr. • Withee). Kelly finished 17th with a time of 20:02, while Helegesen placed 19th in 20:03, Brooks 23rd in 20:09, Bassett 34th in 20:41, DeBaker 39th in 21:13 and Wells 44th in 21:30.

The Titans also had place Lauren Reigel (Fr. • Greenville) finish 51st with a time of 21:54, Kristin Stockheimer (So. • West Salem) 53rd in 21:57, Mariah McMullen (Fr. • Byron, Ill.) 55th in 22:08, Alexa Nutter (Fr. • Fennimore) 56th in 22:10, Morgan Engelhart (Fr. • Oregon) 58th in 22:13, Lauren Pinzl (So. • Mercer) 59th in 22:5, Kelsey Sweeney (So. • Verona) 61st in 22:32, Gabrhael Walman (Fr. • Franklin) 66th in 23:13, Michelle Murray (Fr. • Waunakee) 67th in 23:15, Carlyn Brown (Jr. • Belleville) 69th in 23:31, Jennifer Dedolph (Fr. • Tigerton) 74th in 24:21 and Brittany Felton (Fr. • New Lisbon) 84th in 27:00.
