Cazzola, Titans Finish Fourth At NCAA Midwest Regional

Christy Cazzola (So. • Kaukauna) finished fourth in the individual competition to lead the UW-Oshkosh women's cross country team to a fourth-place listing at the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional held Saturday (Nov. 13) at the Saukie Golf Course in Rock Island, Ill.

Two-time defending regional champion UW-Eau Claire won the 38-team meet with 85 points. Washington University (Mo.) finished second to the Blugolds with 93 points, while UW-Stevens Point placed third with 98, UW-Oshkosh fourth with 122 and University of Chicago (Ill.) fifth with 133.

Washington University entered the meet ranked fifth in the NCAA Division III by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, University of Chicago sixth, UW-Eau Claire 14th, UW-Stevens Point 17th and UW-Oshkosh 22nd. All five teams are expected to represent the Midwest Region at next Saturday's (Nov. 20) NCAA Division III Championship in Waverly, Iowa.

Rounding out the top 10 teams were sixth-place North Central College (Ill.) with 182 points, seventh-place UW-La Crosse with 213, eighth-place UW-Platteville with 226, ninth-place Illinois Wesleyan University with 266 and 10th-place St. Norbert College with 301.

Cazzola maneuvered her way around the 6,000-meter course in a time of 21:34. Cazzola was one of two UW-Oshkosh runners finishing in the top 15, with the other being Brittany Haas (Sr. • St. Charles, Ill.) who placed 15th with a time of 22:06.

Elizabeth Lawton of the University of Chicago (Ill.) won the individual title with a time of 20:57. Jenny Scherer of St. Norbert College finished second among the meet's 263 runners with a time of 21:02, while Amanda Laesch of North Central College placed third in 21:20 and Mary Kate Beyer of Monmouth College (Ill.) fifth in 21:41.

In addition to Cazzola and Haas, UW-Oshkosh also received team scoring from Allison Gehl (Sr. • Sherwood), McKenzie Kelly (So. • New Richmond) and Jennifer Piskor (Sr. • Eagan, Minn). Gehl finished 31st with a time of 22:29, while Kelly placed 35th in 22:35 and Piskor 37th in 22:36.

UW-Oshkosh also had Cassie Petersen (Sr. • Marinette) finish 42nd with a time of 22:46 and Samantha Helgesen (Jr. • Bristol) 90th in 23:36.
