Titans Headed To Madison For WIAC Championship

MADISON, Wis.- Doubles partners Kayla Gibbs and Jameson Gregory will lead UW-Oshkosh into this weekend's competition at the WIAC Women's Tennis Championship (Presented by Culver's) in Madison.

The WIAC Championship, hosted by UW-Oshkosh, is set to begin at 1 p.m. on Saturday (Oct. 21) and 9 a.m. Sunday (Oct. 22) at the University of Wisconsin's Nielsen Tennis Stadium.

The 52nd assembly of WIAC teams will decide three sets of doubles winners, along with six singles champions, in addition to the team winner.

The opening day of competition will consist of the first two rounds of doubles matches followed by the first round of singles matches. The second day of the championship will consist of the final two rounds of singles contests followed by the last round of doubles matches.

The teams that place top four from this weekend's seven-team championship will advance to a WIAC Team Tournament in April. That event will be held at the site of the overall WIAC champion and will determine the conference's automatic qualifier to the NCAA Division III Championships.

This year's team title will be determined by using a combination of the regular season dual-meet standings and the WIAC Championship results. The finish in the regular season standings accounts for one-third of the criteria while the conference championship finish accounts for the remaining two-thirds.

Point distribution following the year's dual-meet rotation has UW-Whitewater (6-0) receiving 7 points, UW-Eau Claire (5-1) 6 points, UW-La Crosse (4-2) 5 points, UW-Oshkosh (3-3) 4 points, UW-Stevens Point (2-4) 3 points, UW-Stout (1-5) 2 points, and UW-River Falls (0-6) 1 point.

This championship, UW-Whitewater is aiming for it's 17th consecutive WIAC title. The Warhawks claim six No. 1 seeds while UW-Eau Claire owns two and UW-Oshkosh possesses one.

UW-Whitewater claimed its conference-best 23rd championship a year ago with 21 overall points to surpass UW-Eau Claire's second-place total of 18 points.

Gregory and Gibbs, currently 10-2 in doubles competition, earned a number one seed for the Titans in No. 1 doubles. The duo will start the first round on a bye and will face the winner of #4/#5 match in the second round.

Hannah Stitt, who placed 6th in the No. 6 singles in 2022, is seeded 4th for this year's league tournament at No. 6 singles. She is set to take on Grace Henes of UW-Stevens Point in the first round of No. 6 singles. Also earning No. 4 seeds are Ella Nguyen, Jameson Gregory, and Kayla Gibbs.

Earning No. 5 seeds were Olivia Pethan and Alysa Pattee in the first rounds of No. 1 and No. 2 singles against Tristin Jantz and Quinlyn Mack both of UW-Stevens Point.

Pattee and Pethan also seeded No. 5 in Doubles No. 1 against UW-Stevens Point's Jantz and Scharf, while Courtney Carpenter and Nguyen are seeded No. 4 in the first round of doubles No. 2 against Mack and Chloe Leithold of UW-Stevens Point.
