Titans Ousted by Blugolds, Blue Devils At WIAC Championship

The UW-Oshkosh women's tennis team concluded its abbreviated 2020-21 season with a pair of defeats at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship (presented by Culver's) held Saturday (April 24) in Whitewater.

Seventh-seeded UW-Oshkosh suffered a 9-0 loss to second-seeded UW-Eau Claire in the first round of the seven-team tournament before losing a 7-2 decision to sixth-seeded UW-Stout in the consolation match.

Other results from the first round had third-seeded UW-La Crosse defeat UW-Stout, 9-0, and fourth-seeded UW-Stevens Point oust fifth-seeded UW-River Falls, 8-1.

Semifinal action featured top-seeded UW-Whitewater beating UW-Stevens Point, 5-0, and UW-La Crosse outlasting UW-Eau Claire, 5-2.

UW-Whitewater and UW-La Crosse will battle Sunday (April 25) in the title match, with the winner receiving the WIAC's automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Championship. UW-Whitewater is the 13-time defending conference champion.

Teams achieved their seeding for the WIAC Championship from league dual matches contested during the regular season. UW-Whitewater earned the tournament's top seed by going unbeaten in six conference dual matches while UW-Eau Claire followed with a 5-1 record, UW-La Crosse at 4-2, UW-Stevens Point at 3-3, UW-River Falls at 2-4, UW-Stout at 1-5 and UW-Oshkosh at 0-6.

UW-Oshkosh trailed 3-0 following its doubles competition against UW-Eau Claire on Saturday. The Titans' best effort occurred in the second flight, where Angie Carini and Courtney Salisbury lost an 8-4 result to Alexa Brooks and Emily Cooper.

Titans Michelle Spicer and Maddie Toboyek lost their No. 1 doubles contest by an 8-2 score to Elaine Franta and Lindsey Henderson.

UW-Eau Claire's Natalie Girard and Morgan Nelson posted an 8-0 victory over Madeline Beck and Hannah Stitt at No. 3 doubles.

UW-Oshkosh lost all six singles contests to the Blugolds in straight sets. Spicer won seven games during her 6-2, 7-5 loss to Franta in the first flight while Toboyek won three games in her 6-0, 6-3 defeat to Henderson in the second.

The Blugolds (10-4) posted a pair of shutouts during the singles competition as Brooks defeated Stitt in the fourth flight and Sydney Presler ousted Carini in the sixth by 6-0, 6-0 scores.

Other individual winners for UW-Eau Claire were Cooper in the third flight and Nelson in the fifth. Cooper registered a 6-0, 6-1 win over Salisbury while Nelson marked a 6-2, 6-0 triumph over Beck.

UW-Oshkosh (0-9) picked up a pair of victories during Saturday's season-ending consolation loss to UW-Stout (2-6).

The Titans obtained a 6-3, 7-5 win from Toboyek over Annie Sandry at No. 2 singles and an 8-6 victory from Spicer and Toboyek over Sandry and Lauren Couves at No. 1 doubles.

UW-Oshkosh was down 2-1 to UW-Stout following the doubles competition as Carinia and Salisbury and Beck and Stitt lost 8-4 results in the second and third flights, respectively. Carina and Salisbury were beaten by Mariah Kent and Olivia Leipnitz while Beck and Stitt were defeated by Krystin Hanson and Kylie Rennie.

The Titans lost their remaining five singles contests to the Blue Devils in straight sets, including Spicer's 6-2, 6-3 loss to Couves in the first flight, Salisbury's 6-2, 6-4 loss to Kent in the third and Beck's 6-1, 6-3 loss to Hanson in the fifth.

UW-Stout wrapped up its list of individual winners with Leipnitz's 6-1, 6-0 victory over Stitt in the fourth flight and Madeline Binczak's 6-2, 6-0 triumph over Carini in the sixth.
