Titans Suffer Loss To Pointers

UW-Oshkosh's Michelle Spicer lost a super tiebreaker during the final skirmish of the day as the UW-Stevens Point women's tennis team earned a 9-0 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory over the Titans on Wednesday (April 7) in Stevens Point.

Spicer did all she could to help UW-Oshkosh avoid the shutout defeat, but came up short in her 3-6, 6-3 (10-8) loss to Barbara Covek at No. 1 singles.

The Titans (0-3, 0-2 WIAC) also received competitive singles performances from Maddie Toboyek and Madeline Beck. Toboyek lost a 6-1, 6-3 result to Jenna Koepp in the second flight while Beck lost a 7-5, 6-2 decision to Leah Hollander in the fifth.

Other individual winners for UW-Stevens Point (4-1, 1-1 WIAC) were Faith Leithold, Kaitlyn Hess and Anna Dobbe. Leithold defeated Courtney Salisbury, 6-0, 6-1, in the third flight while Hess ousted Hannah Stitt, 6-0, 6-0, in the fourth. Dobbe was a 6-0, 6-0 winner over Angie Carini in the sixth flight.

UW-Stevens Point lost only three games, all in the second flight, to UW-Oshkosh during the doubles competition. The No. 2 doubles contest had UW-Stevens Point's Chloe and Faith Leithold defeat Carini and Salisbury by an 8-3 score.

The Pointers acquired their remaining doubles victories from Covek and Koepp in the first flight and Hess and Grace Henes in the third. Both UW-Stevens Point tandems won by 8-0 scores as Covek and Koepp defeated Spicer and Toboyek while Hess and Henes beat Beck and Stitt.

UW-Stevens Point's victory snapped a seven-match losing streak to UW-Oshkosh.

The Titans host UW-La Crosse on Saturday (April 10) at Valley Fitness & Racquet in Neenah.
