Warhawks, Eagles Defeat Titans In WIAC Team Tournament

UW-Oshkosh took fourth place at the WIAC Women's Tennis Team Tournament after suffering defeats to UW-Whitewater and UW-La Crosse on Saturday (April 27) in Whitewater.

The Titans lost 5-0 to regular-season champion UW-Whitewater in the opening round before dropping a 5-1 decision to UW-La Crosse in the third-place contest. UW-Whitewater then recorded a 9-0 victory over UW-Eau Claire (17-3) in the title match to earn the WIAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship for the sixth consecutive year.

UW-Whitewater (20-8), ranked 28th in the country by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, lost only two games during its victory over UW-Oshkosh (10-10).

The Warhawks won 24 of 25 games in doubles play, including 8-0 victories by Megan Kaster and Jackie Vitale in the second flight and Lauren Aguilar and Kelly Foster in the third. Kaster and Vitale defeated Valerie Langkau (Jr. • Oshkosh) and Karlie Laveau (So. • Waukesha), while Aquilar and Foster ousted Maggie Bolton (Fr. • Janesville) and Andrea Larson (Jr. • Hartland).

UW-Whitewater's Alexandra Bayliss and Sydney Divelbiss posted an 8-1 triumph over Morgan Counts (Jr. • Oshkosh) and Erica Van Riper (So. • Waukesha) at No. 1 doubles.

Only two contests were completed in singles play. The Warhawks owned both winners as Aguilar tallied a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Llora Waldman (So. • Wausau) in the fifth flight and Erika Williams a 6-0, 6-0 triumph over Hannah Bostwick (So. • Whitefish Bay) in the sixth.

UW-La Crosse (14-8) took all three doubles contests in its victory over UW-Oshkosh, including an 8-0 win by Bryanne Blanton and Abby Tresedder over Counts and Van Riper in the first flight.

The Eagles also received victories from the tandems of Kimmy Mrozek and Rachael Wabers and Jennifer Graham and Kendra Woyahn. Mrozek and Wabers beat Langkau and Laveau by an 8-4 score in the second flight, while Graham and Woyahn topped Bolton and Larson by an 8-2 result in the third.

UW-Oshkosh earned its lone team point at No. 5 singles. The Titans won the point as Laveau defeated Graham, 6-2, 6-1.

UW-La Crosse clinched the overall victory with individual wins from Mrozek in the second flight and Woyahn in the fifth. Mrozek defeated Langkau, 6-0, 6-0, while Woyahn ousted Waldman, 6-3, 6-1.

With the exception of the championship match, all contests ended when a victory was secured.
