Titans Capture Fourth Place At WIAC Championship

Valerie Langkau (Jr. • Oshkosh) and Karlie Laveau (So. • Waukesha) finished second in the third doubles flight as UW-Oshkosh placed fourth at the WIAC Women's Tennis Championship on Saturday and Sunday (Oct. 20-21) in Madison.

Scoring 21 points, UW-Whitewater captured the team title for the sixth straight year. The Warhawks won all three doubles crowns and 5-of-6 singles flights. UW-Eau Claire came in second with 18 points, along with UW-La Crosse in third (15), UW-Oshkosh fourth (12), UW-Stevens Point fifth (8), UW-River Falls sixth (7) and UW-Stout seventh (3).

Langkau and Laveau began their run to the final with an 8-3 victory over UW-La Crosse's Karie Williams and Rachael Wabers. In the second round, the Titan duo topped Makayla Newberry and Hannah Klimek of UW-River Falls by another 8-3 tally. UW-Whitewater's Lauren Aguilar and Kelly Foster then recorded an 8-2 triumph over Langkau and Laveau for the flight championship.

Laveau owned UW-Oshkosh's top individual finish with her third-place showing at No. 6 singles. She got past Klimek with scores of 6-4 and 6-1. UW-La Crosse's Andrea Vivian defeated Laveau in round two by a 6-0, 6-0 tally. In the third-place match, Laveau triumphed over UW-Eau Claire's Colleen McCullough, 6-2, 7-5.

Morgan Counts (Jr. • Oshkosh) contributed fourth-place scoring in both No. 2 flights. Her singles victory was a 6-2, 6-3 decision over Amanda Drangeid of UW-River Falls. Counts then fell to UW-Whitewater's Alexandra Bayliss, 6-0, 6-1, and UW-La Crosse's Olivia Hartwick, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.

At No. 2 doubles, Counts teamed with Erica Van Riper (So. • Waukesha) to earn fourth place. The tandem posted an 8-3 win over Monica Preisig and Allison Fortier (UW-Stevens Point) during the first round. UW-Whitewater's Megan Kasten and Jackie Vitale then knocked off the Titans, 8-2, before UW-La Crosse's Vivian and Bryanne Blanton notched an 8-3 victory over Counts and Van Riper in the third-place match.

Van Riper added a fourth-place standing in the fifth singles flight. She breezed past Newberry in the opening round, 6-3, 6-0. Aguilar later fought off Van Riper for a 6-3, 6-4 decision. The third-place bout required a tiebreaker, with UW-Eau Claire's Mary Frassetto prevailing, 6-1, 7-6 (2-0).

The top four teams, including UW-Oshkosh, compete at the WIAC Tournament on April 27 in Whitewater. The Titans' next match is at UW-La Crosse on April 6.
