Titans To Compete At WIAC Tennis Championship

UW-Oshkosh will see how its players stack up at the WIAC Women's Tennis Championship this weekend in Madison. Competition begins Saturday (Oct. 20) and concludes Sunday (Oct. 21) at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium.

This event accounts for two-thirds of the conference title formula. The regular-season dual meet standings determine the remaining third.

UW-Whitewater has captured the last five WIAC titles. This fall, the Warhawks earned seven points for its 6-0 dual meet record. UW-Eau Claire finished second with a 5-1 record (6 points), while UW-La Crosse placed third at 4-2 (5 points), UW-Oshkosh fourth at 3-3 (4 points), UW-River Falls fifth at 2-4 (3 points), UW-Stevens Point sixth at 1-5 (2 points) and UW-Stout seventh at 0-6 (1 point).

After the points are added from the WIAC Championship, the top four teams in the overall standings advance to the WIAC Team Tournament in April.

Morgan Counts (Jr. • Oshkosh), Karlie Laveau (So. • Waukesha) and Erica Van Riper (So. • Waukesha) own the best individual records for the Titans. Counts is 11-5 on the year, while Laveau is 10-2 and Van Riper 8-4. Megan Etten (Jr. • Howard) and Preslee Nolte (So. • Warren, N.J.) have a team-leading 8-4 record in doubles play.

UW-Oshkosh's highest individual seed belongs to Laveau. She is seeded third in the sixth flight and meets sixth-seeded Hannah Klimek of UW-River Falls in her opening match.

In doubles play, Counts and Van Riper received the Titans' highest seed. The tandem is seeded fourth in the second flight and battles Allison Fortier and Monica Preisig of UW-Stevens Point in their first contest.

UW-Whitewater won all six singles and all three doubles flights at last year's WIAC Championship. The Warhawks' Lauren Aguilar, Alexandra Bayliss and Megan Kasten each own a pair of singles titles. UW-Whitewater's Sydney Divelbiss has accumulated two singles crowns and one doubles championship in the past two seasons.

Additional returning champions include UW-Eau Claire's Taylor Heltne (No. 6 singles - 2009) and UW-La Crosse's Abby Tresedder (No. 2 doubles - 2010).

The Titans finished third at this event last year and fourth in 2010.
