Titans Fail To Net Falcons

Depth was a luxury for the UW-River Falls women's tennis team as it posted a 6-3 victory over UW-Oshkosh on Friday (Oct. 9) in River Falls.

UW-River Falls (7-5/2-3 WIAC) led 2-1 after the doubles competition, but pulled away from UW-Oshkosh (4-3/1-3 WIAC) on the strength of victories in the third through sixth singles flights.

UW-River Falls had a pair of double winners in Brittany Bonine and Amy Goertzen. Bonine defeated Erica Troia (So. • Madison), 6-1, 6-3, at No. 6 singles and teamed with Naomi Wolf to record an 8-4 victory over Emily Bostwick (Sr. • Whitefish Bay) and Liz Leffler (So. • Racine) at No. 1 doubles. Goertzen ousted Whitney Tornow (Jr. • Neenah), 6-4, 6-4, at No. 4 singles and paired with Amy Johnson to tally an 8-4 win over Troia and Jennifer Pietkauskis (So. • Sharon) at No. 3 doubles.

UW-Oshkosh picked up its lone doubles victory in the second flight. Tornow and Brittany Braasch (Sr. • Ixonia) earned the win with an 8-6 decision over Stacia Kozel and Cassie Wood.

UW-Oshkosh won at the top two single levels as Leffler defeated Katie Ostrowski, 7-5, 6-3, in the first flight and Bostwick topped Wood, 6-0, 6-2, in the second.

UW-River Falls also obtained wins from Kozel and Jenny Paxton at No. 5 singles and No. 3 singles, respectively. Kozel beat Pietkauskis, 6-4, 6-3, while Paxton edged Eva Counsell (So. • Elkhorn), 3-6, 6-1, 6-3.

UW-Oshkosh plays at UW-La Crosse on Saturday (Oct. 10).
