Titans Finish Sixth At WIAC Championship

Emily Bostwick (Sr. • Whitefish Bay) was involved in UW-Oshkosh's highest finishes as the Titans placed sixth at the WIAC Women's Tennis Championship held Saturday and Sunday (Oct. 24-25) at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison.

Bostwick finished fourth at No. 2 singles and teamed with Liz Leffler (So. • Racine) to place fifth at No. 1 doubles.

In singles play, the fifth-seeded Bostwick posted a 1-2 record, including a 6-2, 6-4 loss to Ingrid Stensvaag of UW-Whitewater in the third-place match. Bostwick opened her activity with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over fourth-seeded Brenna McCormick of UW-Eau Claire and a 6-3, 6-1 loss to Chelsea Allbaugh of UW-Stevens Point.

In doubles action, Bostwick and Leffler won two of their three contests as the seventh seed. Following an 8-6 loss to Michelle Daciolas and Kalla Schaefer of UW-Whitewater, Bostwick and Leffler bounced back to register wins of 8-2 over third-seeded Gina Dahl and Courtney Lynne of UW-Eau Claire and 8-6 over fourth-seeded Allie Hinman and Abby Werwie of UW-Stout.

Leffler added a sixth-place finish for the Titans at No. 1 singles. The sixth-seeded Leffler tallied a 1-2 record, with her lone victory being a 1-6, 6-2, 6-4 decision over seventh-seeded Katie Ostrowski of UW-River Falls. Leffler lost matches of 6-4, 6-4 to Rachel Benn of UW-Stevens Point and 7-6, 6-0 to Dahl of UW-Eau Claire.

UW-Oshkosh also received a fourth-place finish from Whitney Tornow (Jr. • Neenah) at No. 5 singles. Tornow went 1-2 in the tournament, including a 7-6 (1), 2-6, 6-0 upset of third-seeded Kaylei Sorensen of UW-Stevens Point in the opening round. The sixth-seeded Tornow then lost decisions of 6-2, 6-7 (2), 6-3 to Mara Weiner of UW-La Crosse and 6-4, 6-4 to Jillian Horner of UW-Eau Claire. The loss to Horner came in the third-place match.

Eva Counsell (So. • Elkhorn) contributed a fifth-place finish at No. 3 singles. Counsell marked a 2-1 record as the flight's sixth seed. Counsell followed a 6-0, 6-0 loss to Katie McDonald of UW-La Crosse with wins of 6-3, 6-4 over seventh-seeded Erin James of UW-Stout and 6-3, 6-2 over fourth-seeded Emily Riordan of UW-Stevens Point.

UW-Oshkosh finished sixth in the team standings at the WIAC Championship with 24 points. UW-Whitewater won the event with 57 points, while UW-La Crosse placed second with 53, UW-Eau Claire third with 41, UW-Stevens Point fourth with 35, UW-River Falls fifth with 26 and UW-Stout seventh with 16. UW-Whitewater's winning effort included two singles titles and three first-place doubles finishes.

Combined with points awarded from the regular season dual meet standings, UW-Whitewater won its third straight overall WIAC title. The Warhawks totaled 21 points in the final overall standings, while UW-La Crosse finished second with 18. UW-Eau Claire ranked third with 15 points, UW-Stevens Point fourth with 12, UW-River Falls fifth with nine, UW-Oshkosh sixth with six and UW-Stout seventh with three.

UW-Eau Claire, UW-La Crosse, UW-Stevens Point and UW-Whitewater advance to a team tournament to decide the conference's automatic qualifier for the NCAA Division III Championship. The WIAC Team Tournament will be held at UW-Whitewater the weekend prior to next spring's NCAA Division III Championship.

Other UW-Oshkosh results had Brittany Braasch (Sr. • Ixonia) and Jennifer Pietkauskis (So. • Sharon) both finish sixth with 1-2 records at No. 4 singles and No. 6 singles, respectively. In doubles play, the UW-Oshkosh tandems of Braasch and Tornow and Pietkauskis and Erica Troia (So. • Madison) both finished sixth in the second and third flights. Braasch and Tornow went 0-2 in the tournament, while Pietkauskis and Troia went 1-2.

UW-Stevens Point's Karlyn Jakusz was named WIAC Coach of the Year, while UW-Whitewater's Stensvaag received the league's Judy Kruckman Scholar-Athlete Award. Named to the WIAC's All-Sportsmanship Team were Dahl of UW-Eau Claire, Kelly Stadum of UW-La Crosse, Braasch of UW-Oshkosh, Ostrowski of UW-River Falls, Riordan of UW-Stevens Point, Stephanie Schick of UW-Stout and Schaefer of UW-Whitewater.
