Titans Slay Green Knights

The UW-Oshkosh women's tennis team got back on the winning track with an 8-1 victory over St. Norbert College on Friday (Oct. 2) in Green Bay.

UW-Oshkosh (4-2), which suffered setbacks to UW-Eau Claire and UW-Whitewater in its previous two outings, won five of six singles contests and all three doubles bouts against St. Norbert College (3-5).

UW-Oshkosh earned three of its five singles victories in straight sets, including Whitney Tornow's (Jr. • Neenah) 6-0, 6-1 decision over Maria Slusarek in the fifth flight. The Titans also received straight-set wins of 7-6 (7-0), 6-1 from Emily Bostwick (Sr. • Whitefish Bay) over Kelly Van Handel in the second flight and 6-0, 6-3 from Brittany Braasch (Sr. • Ixonia) over Anna Reardon in the fourth.

UW-Oshkosh worked overtime to win two singles contests as Eva Counsell (So. • Elkhorn) and Jennifer Pietkauskis (So. • Sharon) defeated their opponents on a tiebreaker. Counsell posted a 6-4, 1-6 (10-6) victory over Allyson Yankle in the third flight, while Pietkauskis registered a 6-3, 4-6 (11-9) triumph over Callie Schroeder in the sixth.

St. Norbert College picked up its lone victory at No. 1 singles, where Lauren Post outlasted Liz Leffler (So. • Racine) 2-6, 6-2 (10-2).

UW-Oshkosh won all three of its doubles contests by 8-5 scores. The Titans got wins from Bostwick and Leffler over Post and Van Handel in the first flight, Braasch and Tornow over Yankle and Erin Riutta in the second and Pietkauskis and Erica Troia (So. • Madison) over Slusarek and Kristyn Klind in the third.

UW-Oshkosh's next competition is next Friday (Oct. 9) at UW-River Falls.
