Titans Unable To Tame Pointers

UW-Oshkosh won two of three debates in doubles play, but only one of six disputes in singles action as it dropped a 6-3 women's tennis decision to UW-Stevens Point on Friday (Oct. 16) at the Oshkosh YMCA Tennis Center.

UW-Oshkosh (4-5/1-5 WIAC) grabbed a 2-1 lead on wins by Emily Bostwick (Sr. • Whitefish Bay) and Liz Leffler (So. • Racine) at No. 1 doubles and Brittany Braasch (Sr. • Ixonia) and Whitney Tornow (Jr. • Neenah) at No. 2 doubles. Bostwick and Leffler defeated Chelsea Allbaugh and Rachel Benn, 8-2, while Braasch and Tornow ousted Kaitlyn King and Emily Riordan, 8-4.

UW-Stevens Point (10-5/3-3 WIAC) tallied its lone doubles victory when Leah Benn and Kaylei Sorensen defeated Jennifer Pietkauskis (So. • Sharon) and Erica Troia (So. • Madison), 8-2, in the third flight.

Singles play featured three contests going to a third set and another to a tiebreaker.

UW-Stevens Point singles players winning in the third and final set were Rachel Benn in the first flight, Allbaugh in the second and King in the fourth. Benn defeated Leffler, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3, while Allbaugh topped Bostwick, 6-0, 5-7, 7-5, and King bested Braasch, 7-5, 1-6, 6-2.

UW-Stevens Point won a tiebreaker at No. 3 singles as Riordan defeated Eva Counsell (So. • Elkhorn), 0-6, 6-3 (10-8).

Winning contests in straight sets were UW-Oshkosh's Tornow in the fifth flight and UW-Stevens Point's Leah Benn in the sixth. Tornow tallied a 6-4, 6-2 win over Sorensen, while Benn recorded a 6-2, 7-5 triumph over Pietkauskis.

UW-Oshkosh and UW-Stevens Point will both compete at the WIAC Championship next weekend at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison. Competition begins at 1 p.m. on Saturday (Oct. 24) and 9 a.m. on Sunday (Oct. 25).
