Challoner Leads Titans At WIAC Championship

Katie Challoner (Fr. • Sun Prairie) recorded a pair of top-eight finishes as UW-Oshkosh placed fifth at the WIAC Women's Swimming & Diving Championship held this past weekend (Feb. 14-16) in Brown Deer.

UW-La Crosse scored 910.5 points to capture its second straight title and 13th overall. UW-Stevens Point finished second with 695 points, UW-Whitewater third with 652, UW-Eau Claire fourth with 641.5, UW-Oshkosh fifth with 199 and UW-River Falls sixth with 149. This was the eighth straight season that the Titans placed fifth at the WIAC Championship.

Challoner's team-leading efforts came in the breaststroke races, where she finished seventh in the 200-yard event with a time of 2:31.19 and eighth in the 100-yard competition at 1:08.14. Challoner set a school record with her time of 1:07.32 in the preliminary competition of the 100-yard breaststroke.

Other Titans finishing eighth were Sally Hesby (Fr. • Plymouth, Minn.) and Casey Houts (Fr. • Schaumburg, Ill.). Hesby compiled 348.70 points in the three-meter diving while Houts completed the 1,650-yard freestyle in 19:04.53. Hesby also placed 11th in the one-meter diving with 302.70 points and Houts 13th in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:18.73.

Five UW-Oshkosh competitors each ranked from 11th to 16th in two events, including Marissa Graff (Jr. • Hancock, Mich.) who finished 11th in the 1,650-yard freestyle with a time of 19:36.86 and 15th in the 400-yard individual medley at 5:02.01.

Britney Hilgendorf (So. • Madison) placed 12th in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:19.41 and 13th in the 400-yard individual medley at 4:49.25, while Vanessa Jagodinsky (Jr. • Green Bay) listed 13th in the 200-yard butterfly at 2:22.40 and 15th in the 100-yard butterfly at 1:04.80 and Katie Duffey (Sr. • McFarland) 14th in the 200-yard backstroke at 2:20.15 and 16th in the 100-yard butterfly at 1:04.30. The Titans' Laura Sullivan (Fr. • Milwaukee) finished 15th in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:36.26 and 16th in the 200-yard individual medley at 2:21.91.

Adding 12th-place finishes for UW-Oshkosh were Liz Schneider (Sr. • Middleton) and Emily Shandley (Sr. • Oak Creek). Schneider swam to a time of 20:40.30 in the 1,650-yard freestyle and Shandley to a performance of 1:59.63 in the 200-yard freestyle.

UW-Oshkosh set a school record with its fifth-place time of 8:05.93 in the 800-yard freestyle relay. Members of the record-breaking squad were Hilgendorf, Sullivan, Houts and Shandley. Hilgendorf also established a school mark with her time of 11:02.41 during the 1,000-yard portion of the 1,650-yard freestyle.

UW-Whitewater's Amy Spaay was chosen the Swimmer of the Meet, while her teammate, Sierra Becker, earned the Diver of the Meet honor. UW-La Crosse's Charlie King was selected the Coach of the Year.
