Titans Shut Out By Nationally Ranked Maroons

Nationally ranked University of Chicago (Ill.) held UW-Oshkosh to just two shots as it defeated the Titans, 3-0, in a women's soccer match held Saturday (Sept. 23) at J. J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.

The Maroons (8-0), who entered the contest ranked second in the NCAA Division III by the United Soccer Coaches, recorded their decisive goal 17 minutes into action. The University of Chicago then secured the win with two scores in the game's final seven minutes.

Hanna Watkins put University of Chicago, a semifinalist in last year's NCAA postseason tournament, ahead with her 10-yard header off a cross from Mackenzie Peebles at the 16:51 mark of the opening period.

The score remained 1-0 until the Maroons' Jenna McKinney kicked a 5-yard shot into the goal during the contest's 84th minute (83:29). McKinney's goal followed a pass from Madori Spiker.

The University of Chicago then tripled its lead on a goal by Claudia Hodgetts with 2:41 (87:19) remaining. Hodgetts scored from 18 yards with the help of a McKinney pass.

Goalkeeper Miranda Malone stopped a pair of UW-Oshkosh (3-4-1) shots to earn the shutout victory for the Maroons. Malone saved shots by the Titans' Alek Kleis in the 47th minute (46:05) and Maddie Morris in the 62nd (61:43).

The University of Chicago dominated the offensive action by posting advantages of 30-2 in shots and 13-0 in corner kicks.

The Maroons, who had one shot in each half bounce off the crossbar, were led by the six shots from Kelsey Moore, the five from both McKinney and Mia Calamari and the four from both Spiker and Watkins. McKinney owned a team-leading three shots on goal.

UW-Oshkosh goalkeeper Jessica Galason saved 10 shots while allowing all three University of Chicago scores. She blocked six shots in the first half and four in the second.

The University of Chicago has won all eight of its matches this season by at least a two-goal margin. The shutout for the Maroons was their fifth of the year.
