Eagles Shut Out Titans In Regular-Season Finale

UW-La Crosse scored a pair of goals late in the first half and added another midway through the second of its 3-0 victory over the UW-Oshkosh women's soccer team on Saturday (Oct. 29) at J. J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.

The win clinched second place in the WIAC standings for UW-La Crosse (13-4, 5-2 WIAC) and gave the Eagles both a second seed and a first-round bye for next week's six-team league tournament.

UW-Whitewater (17-1, 6-0 WIAC) went undefeated in WIAC play this season to secure its sixth league title, all in the last seven years. The Warhawks earned the top seed for the WIAC Championship and will begin play in the semifinal round.

UW-Oshkosh (9-8-1, 3-4 WIAC) finished the regular season tied with UW-Stout (6-10-2, 3-4) for fourth place in the league standings. Due to a 2-1 overtime loss to the Blue Devils on Oct.15, UW-Oshkosh will be seeded fifth for the WIAC Championship and travel to fourth-seeded UW-Stout on Tuesday (Nov. 1) for a first round match.

Third-seeded UW-Eau Claire (7-8-2, 4-2-1 WIAC) will host sixth-seeded UW-River Falls (7-9-2, 2-4-1) in Tuesday's other first-round matchup.

UW-Whitewater and UW-La Crosse will both host semifinal round contests on Thursday (Nov. 3). UW-Whitewater will play the lowest remaining seed while UW-La Crosse will battle the highest remaining seed.

The semifinal winners will meet next Saturday (Nov. 5) for the league's automatic berth into the NCAA Division III Championship.

UW-La Crosse, which shared last year's WIAC regular-season title with UW-Oshkosh, jumped ahead of the Titans during the 40th minute (39:26) of Saturday's action. The Eagles scored when Maddie Granos followed a Natalie Herzog pass with a 25-yard kick into the goal.

UW-La Crosse made it a 2-0 score when Cassie Handrick converted a 15-yard kick off an assist by Granos during the 41st minute (40:15).

UW-La Crosse outshot UW-Oshkosh, 17-6, in the first half and took a 2-0 lead to intermission.

The Eagles maintained their two-score advantage until Herzog tallied her team-leading eighth goal of the season in the 72nd minute (71:48). Herzog's 18-yard scoring kick followed a cross from Delaney Harnell.

UW-La Crosse counted nine more shots in the second half to finish the match with 26. The Eagles were led by the five shots from Alex Cording and the four from Margaret Harings.

UW-Oshkosh, which was shut out for just the second time this season, concluded the contest with 10 shots, including four that were launched in the second period. Taylor Arnold and Rachel Elliott paced the Titans with two shots apiece.

UW-Oshkosh goalkeeper Madelyn Runyan saved 12 shots, including 10 in the first half. Abbi Burke stopped seven shots, including four in the second period, while protecting the UW-La Crosse goal.
