Titans Remain Alive In WIAC Title Chase

UW-Oshkosh benefited from an own goal during the second overtime period to defeat UW-Whitewater, 2-1, in a women's soccer match held Wednesday (Oct. 28) at J. J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.

The victory kept the Titans' journey for their first WIAC regular-season title alive, and UW-Oshkosh will have an opportunity to capture the league's top prize when it plays at UW-La Crosse on Saturday (Oct. 31) in the regular-season finale for both teams.

UW-Oshkosh (13-3-1) and UW-La Crosse (12-5-1) currently share first place in the WIAC standings with 5-1 league records, while UW-Whitewater (14-4) follows in third place at 5-2.

The second overtime session was quiet until a shot by UW-Oshkosh's Alek Kleis hit the crossbar and was inadvertently knocked into the goal by a UW-Whitewater defender with 5:32 to play (104:28). The score gave the Titans their second straight win over the Warhawks and denied UW-Whitewater a chance to claim its sixth straight WIAC regular-season championship.

The first overtime period was extremely silent as both teams went without a shot.

UW-Oshkosh scored on its first shot of the game, a 10-yard kick by Rylee Engelland just six minutes into play. Christina Mauthe provided the pass that led to Engelland's second goal of the season.

The Warhawks nearly scored the equalizing goal in the first half, but Engelland saved a shot in the 11th minute and UW-Oshkosh goalkeeper Nina Muzi denied shots in the 22nd, 24th and 40th.

UW-Oshkosh maintained its 1-0 lead until Marie Lesperance scored her fourth goal of the season off a pass from Brianna Reid in the 55th minute (54:18).

Following Lesperance's game-tying score, the Warhawks had four shots saved by Muzi and UW-Oshkosh one attempt by UW-Whitewater goalkeeper Erin Doody. Muzi tallied two of those saves on shots attempted by Warhawks Reid and Karina Rosales in the final five minutes of play of the second half.

Muzi finished the match with eight saves and Doody two.

UW-Whitewater won counts in shots, 20-9, and corner kicks, 6-2. The Warhawks were led by the six shots from Reid, four from Rosales and three from Adria Schueler. Robyn Elliott had five shots and Engelland two to pace the Titans.
