Titans, Green Knights Play To Tie

The UW-Oshkosh women's soccer team tallied an overwhelming advantage in shots, but had to settle for a 2-2, double-overtime tie with St. Norbert College on Wednesday (Oct. 14) at J. J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.

St. Norbert College (8-4-1) scored in each half, including Katie Vanden Avond's goal with 15:34 left in the second period that forced overtime.

UW-Oshkosh (9-2-1), which entered the contest ranked 25th in the NCAA Division III by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, scored both of its goals within an 11-minute span early in the second half.

UW-Oshkosh attempted the game's first six shots before Vanden Avond scored (10-yard kick) off a breakaway pass from Sadie Jung in the 18th minute (17:33) to give the Green Knights a 1-0 lead. The goal was the first allowed by the Titans in 393 minutes (392:28) of action.

St. Norbert College took its one-goal lead to intermission despite trailing 14-2 in the shot count.

UW-Oshkosh, which brought a seven-match winning streak into the contest, tied the score on Christina Mauthe's unassisted goal in the 48th minute (47:19). The 10-yard scoring kick marked Mauthe's seventh goal of the season.

The Titans attempted the game's next three shots before Alex Kleis retrieved Robyn Elliott's deflected kick and scored from 10-yards out in the 58th minute (57:35) to give UW-Oshkosh a 2-1 lead. The goal was the seventh of the season for Kleis.

UW-Oshkosh held its 2-1 lead until Vanden Avond tied the score with her second goal of the match, a 6-yard shot off a feed from Monica Stephans. The goal was Vanden Avond's Division III-leading 28th of the season and the 119th of her career, the third-highest total in Division III history.

The teams went scoreless during the two 10-minute extra periods. UW-Oshkosh owned nine of the 10 overtime shots, including three that were saved by St. Norbert College goalkeeper Maddie Plinska.

UW-Oshkosh, which had won its previous 12 meetings with St. Norbert College, posted advantages of 34-8 in shots and 6-2 in corner kicks. Robyn Elliott paced the Titans with seven shots, while Kleis tallied six and Mauthe and Rachel Elliott five apiece.

St. Norbert College was led by Vanden Avond's six shots.

UW-Oshkosh goalkeeper Nina Muzi went without a save as the Green Knights converted both of their shots on goal. St. Norbert College's Plinska finished the match with 10 saves.

The Titans resume their schedule at UW-River Falls on Saturday (Oct. 17).
