Titans Open Trip To California With Win
Alyssa Arnold and Robyn Elliott scored within 69 seconds of each other midway through the second half to help the UW-Oshkosh women's soccer team defeat the University of California-Santa Cruz on Saturday (Sept. 26) in Santa Cruz, Calif.
Arnold broke a scoreless contest in the 66th minute (65:45) by floating a 30-yard free kick into the back of the net for her third goal of the season.
Elliott then doubled the Titans (5-2) lead with a goal in the 67th minute (66:54). Elliott's fourth score of the season followed a pass from Megan Paulick.
The University of California-Santa Cruz, a first-time opponent of the Titans, cut its deficit to 2-1 on a goal by Megan Carey in the 77th minute (76:05). Carey's goal came after a pass from Kayla McCord.
UW-Oshkosh secured the victory by holding the Banana Slugs to just one shot the remainder of the match, a Carey header that went wide with three seconds left.
The first half went scoreless despite 12 shots by UW-Oshkosh and six by the University of California-Santa Cruz (2-5-2). The Titans added 20 more shots in the second period and the Banana Slugs five.
UW-Oshkosh's 32 shots included seven by Arnold and five from both Elliott and Paulick. Carey led the University of California-Santa Cruz with four shots.
Both goalkeepers went the distance as Nina Muzi saved four shots for UW-Oshkosh and Selina Davila Olivera six for the University of California-Santa Cruz. The Banana Slugs also tallied three team saves.
UW-Oshkosh concludes its two-game trip to California with a match on Sunday (Sept. 27) in Santa Cruz against Mills College (Calif.).
