Titans Overcome Early Defict To Win WIAC Opener

Christina Mauthe and Courtney Leister scored second-half goals to help the UW-Oshkosh women's soccer team pull away for a 3-1 victory over UW-Platteville on Saturday (Sept. 19) at J. J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.

UW-Oshkosh fell behind early in its WIAC opener as the Pioneers' Yamilex Jaramillo took a pass from Miranda Holle and scored on an 8-yard kick just 7:54 into play. The goal, which came on UW-Platteville's first shot of the contest, was Jaramillo's league-leading seventh of the season.

The Titans (3-2, 1-0 WIAC) evened the score in the 21st minute (20:51) when Alyssa Arnold delivered a perfect pass to a streaking Alek Kleis, who was able to round the goalkeeper and slot her shot into the net from 6 yards out. Kleis now leads UW-Oshkosh with five goals on the season.

The teams went to intermission tied at one goal apiece. UW-Oshkosh ended the first half with 14 shots, including four on goal. All six UW-Platteville shots attempted in the opening period were on goal.

UW-Oshkosh's game-winning goal came in the 50th minute (49:39) when Mauthe fired a low shot from 15 yards into the left side of the net.

The Titans held their slim advantage until the 61st minute (60:48) when Leister poked in an 8-yard kick after Robyn Elliott's cross hit the crossbar and fell to her feet.

UW-Oshkosh, which won its WIAC opener for the fifth straight year, nearly added a goal in the 72nd minute when Elliott hit the crossbar for a second time.

The shot advantage fell heavily in favor of the Titans. UW-Oshkosh finished the match with 28 shots after attempting 14 more in the second half. UW-Platteville (1-5, 0-1 WIAC) was held without a shot in the final period and ended the game with six.

Individually, Elliott and Mauthe paced UW-Oshkosh with seven shots apiece. Arnold added six shots and Felicia Retrum three. Holle led the Pioneers with two shots, both on goal.

UW-Oshkosh goalkeeper Nina Muzi was not challenged in the second half and finished the match with five saves. Katie Rash stopped seven shots as the goalkeeper for UW-Platteville.

UW-Oshkosh returns to J. J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium on Sunday (Sept. 20) for a non-conference match against Central College (Iowa).
