Titans Open Season With Five-Goal Performance

Freshman Alek Kleis scored two goals and assisted on another as the UW-Oshkosh women's soccer team won its season opener, 5-1, over Loras College (Iowa) on Tuesday (Sept. 1) at J. J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.

UW-Oshkosh's five goals were the most in a season opener since 2006 and the largest home-opening win since head coach Erin Coppernoll took over the program in 2004. The Titans also snapped a three-game losing streak against Duhawks.

The Titans (1-0) scored two goals in the first half, one by Robyn Elliot in the 23rd minute (22:09) off an assist by Megan Paulick and one by Alyssa Arnold off a Kleis assist in the 33rd minute (32:08). Both goals were long, high shots from outside the box.

In the second half, UW-Oshkosh scored two goals in 35 seconds shortly after conceding a header to Loras College.

The Duhawks put pressure on the Titans' defense, and they broke through with a header from Elizabeth Mills, who scored directly from a corner kick by Gretchen Schutz in the 54th minute (53:45).

UW-Oshkosh restored its two-goal advantage with Kendra Jepson's first career goal in the 66th minute (65:50). After a nice pass from freshman Rylee Engelland, Jepson calmly finished under the keeper from the right side of the box.

Oshkosh added another goal just 35 seconds (65:50) later, when Kleis finished a shot from 12 yards out to the right side of the net for her first goal. Kleis notched another goal in the 82nd minute (81:22) when she picked up the ball at the top of the box and dribbled inside before finishing her shot from 15 yards out.

Robyn Elliott led the Titans with six shots. Arnold added five shots, including a team-high three on goal.

The Titans outshot Loras College, 22-12. The Duhawks held a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks.

Danielle Vujovic led Loras College with three shots, while Mills and Riley O'Neill put two shots on goal.

UW-Oshkosh goalkeeper Nina Muzi went the distance and recorded five saves, while Loras College played two keepers who recorded six total saves. Maria Siebels made four saves in the first half, while Gabrielle Pranger had two saves in the second stanza.

UW-Oshkosh remains at home to host the College of Saint Benedict (Minn.) on Sunday (Sept. 6).
