Titans Move To Title Match Of WIAC Championship

UW-Oshkosh obtained a late second-half goal from Rachel Elliott to defeat UW-Eau Claire, 1-0, in a semifinal round match of the WIAC Women's Soccer Championship held Thursday (Nov. 6) at J. J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.

UW-Oshkosh (11-7-1) advances to play regular-season champion UW-Whitewater (18-2) in the title game of the six-team tournament at 5 p.m. on Saturday (Nov. 8) in Whitewater. The nationally ranked (No. 9) Warhawks moved to the championship contest with their 2-0 victory over UW-River Falls (12-6-3) on Thursday. The winner between UW-Oshkosh and UW-Whitewater earns the WIAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship.

The Titans, who have won five of their last seven games, will be appearing in the title match of the WIAC Championship for the third time in four years and the sixth time overall. UW-Oshkosh lost 1-0 to UW-Whitewater in last year's championship game after edging the Warhawks on a penalty-kick shootout in 2011.

Elliott lifted UW-Oshkosh past UW-Eau Claire (8-10-2) for the second time this season with her goal in the 81st minute (80:59) of play. A cross delivered from her sister, Robyn, created her five-yard shot. The goal was Rachel Elliott's seventh of the season.

The Elliott sisters combined to take nine of UW-Oshkosh's 15 shots in the contest. Rachel Elliott attempted five shots, including two on goal, while Robyn Elliott launched four shots, including three on goal. Amanda Baalke applied additional pressure with her three shots.

UW-Eau Claire, which lost 1-0 to the Titans on Oct. 18, was held to seven shots. The Blugolds were led by the three shots from Tara Dennehy and the two from Caroline Henderson. Dennehy, Henderson and Lauren Lenz accounted for UW-Eau Claire's three shots on goal.

UW-Oshkosh goalkeeper Angela Christensen saved three shots for her first career shutout. She stopped one UW-Eau Claire shot in the first half and two in the second. The shutout was the Titans' 11th of the season.

UW-Eau Claire goalkeeper Emily Byal recorded five saves, including four in the second half. The Blugolds also recorded a team save in the opening period.
