Knights Overcome Early Deficit To Oust Titans

Wartburg College (Iowa) scored twice within a seven-minute span of the first half to overcome an early deficit and defeat the UW-Oshkosh women's soccer team, 3-1, on Friday (Sept. 10) in Waverly, Iowa.

Chelsea Kierszh (Fr. • Oshkosh) gave UW-Oshkosh a 1-0 lead over its first-time opponent when she sent a shot into the goal just 7:36 into play.

Wartburg College (2-1) gained a tie when Katy Wendt scored off a pass from Kelsey Kovacevich in the 20th minute (19:23) of action. The Knights then took the lead on Kaylee Benning's unassisted goal in the 27th minute (26:30).

Wartburg College added an insurance goal when Chelsea Frye scored off a serve from Wendt in the 61st minute (60:04).

UW-Oshkosh attempted 15 shots and three corner kicks. The Titans were led by the three shots of both Becca Blue (So. • Kimberly) and Caitlin Casey (Sr. • Waukesha) and the two shots each of Kierszh, Jessica Erny (Jr. • Wauwatosa) and Nikki Mohr (So. • Crystal Lake, Ill.).

Wartburg College launched 11 shots and two corner kicks. The Knights were paced by the four shots of Wendt and the two of both Benning and Frye.

UW-Oshkosh goalkeeper Brittany Walder (Jr. • Waukesha) saved three shots, with two of them coming in the first half. Wartburg College goalkeeper Monica Noti played the contest without having to make a save.

UW-Oshkosh remains in Iowa to face Grinnell College on Saturday (Sept. 11).
