Overtime Goal Lifts Titans Past Pioneers

Caitlin Casey (Sr. • Waukesha) scored the match-winning goal in the second overtime period to lift the UW-Oshkosh women's soccer team to a 3-2 victory over Grinnell College (Iowa) on Saturday (Sept. 11) in Grinnell, Iowa.

Casey's dramatic goal, which was assisted by Abby Neumeyer (Fr. • Suamico), ended UW-Oshkosh's contest with its first-time opponent in the 103rd minute (102:33) of play.

Becca Blue (So. • Kimberly) gave UW-Oshkosh (3-2) a 2-0 lead when she scored off passes from Casey in the game's 17th (16:58) and 26th minute (25:27).

UW-Oshkosh appeared to have the contest in control, but two goals by Patty Murphy-Geiss early in the second half tied the score. Murphy-Geiss tallied an unassisted goal in the 50th minute (49:48) and an assisted goal by Hannah Safter in the 52nd (51:34).

The rest of regulation play went scoreless despite 11 shots by UW-Oshkosh and three by Grinnell College. The Titans were the owners of all three shots taken during the 12:33 of overtime.

UW-Oshkosh finished the contest with 25 shots, including nine by Casey, four by Blue and three by Chelsea Kierszh (Fr. • Oshkosh). The Titans had five corner kicks.

Grinnell College registered six shots, with three of them belonging to Murphy-Geiss. The Pioneers were credited with one corner kick.

UW-Oshkosh had two players protect its goal, Brittany Walder (Jr. • Waukesha) and Amanda Hughes (Fr. • Oshkosh). Both players saved one shot, with Walder seeing 57:33 of action and Hughes 45:00. Hughes allowed the two Grinnell College scores.

Grinnell College had Jordan Young and Laura McElroy guard its goal. Young made three saves and allowed two goals in 45:00 of action, while McElroy made five saves and yielded one goal in 57:33 of duty.

UW-Oshkosh opens WIAC action at UW-Whitewater on Wednesday (Sept. 15).
