Cyprian Jr. Advances To NCAA Championship

STEVENS POINT, Wis.- Nine members of the UW-Oshkosh men's wrestling team competed in the two-day NCAA Division III Upper Midwest Regional (Mar. 1-2) hosted at UW-Stevens Point.

Guyon Cyprian Jr. (Sr. • Chicago, Ill.) placed third in the 285-pound bracket, securing his spot to the NCAA National Championship. He received a first round bye before losing by a 6-4 decision to Gunnar Garriques of University of Chicago (Ill.). He moved on to pin Cameron Mercer of Concordia in 4:40, defeat Diego Morales of Lakeland by a 13-4 major decision, takedown Loudyn Reese from Pacific University by 17-4 major decision, and win a 4-2 decision over Blake Flach of UW-Stevens Point. He once again faced Garriques, where he won by a 4-1 decision and moved on to face Jackson Schichel of UW-Eau Claire in the third place tilt. He secured his ticket to La Crosse with a 5-2 decision in the first overtime.

In the 184-pound competition, Michael Loger (So. • Andover, Minn.) received a first round bye before losing Niall Schoenfelder of UW-Eau Claire by fall. He moved on to pin Wyatt Haynes of University of Chicago (Ill.) in 1:42 and Marty Koenig of UW-Platteville in 6:59 before losing to Jonathan Pullen of Concordia by 4-3 decision. He placed seventh when Concordia Moorhead's Nathanie Kisgen did not wrestle do due a medical forfeit.

In the 197-pound duals, Matt Hanke (Sr. • Theresa) was taken down first round by technical fall by Connor Collins of UW-Eau Claire. He went on to pin Bryan Romero of Lakeland University and Gregory McDonald of Pacific University (Ore.) in 2:28 and 3:17, defeat Zach Hunter of St. John's University (Minn.) by 13-4 major decision. He then lost to Chicago's Michael Dorazio before facing Logan Neitzel of UW-Stevens Points in the seventh-place matchup where he lost by major decision.

JP Culver (Fr. • Vicksburg, Mich.) started the Titans off in the 125-pound class receiving a first round bye. He was defeated in the second round by Kie Anderson of Concordia Moorhead (Minn.) by fall. He received another bye before being defeated by Donovan Fields of Elmhurst by technical fall.

In the 141-pound competition, Andrew Schad (So. • Kiel) pinned Jontae Hardaway from Pacific at 2:39 in the first round and lost by major decision to Cole Nelson from Carthage College. He went on to receive a bye and was then defeated by Cale Coppess of Wheaton College (Ill.) by technical fall.

In the 149-pound tilts, JoJo Mendoza (So. • Racine) pick up a first round bye and was pinned in the second round by Charlie Stahl of Augsburg University (Minn.). He continued in the consolation bracket with a bye before losing by major decision to Zach Kolb from Elmhurst.

In the 157-pound contests, Ira Schlottke (Fr. • Grafton) received a bye before losing by fall to Carson Cook of Concordia University Wisconsin. After receiving another bye, Schlottke lost by technical fall to Mataeo Blessing of Elmhurst.

Joey Spizzirri (So. • Palatine, Ill.) competed in the 165-pound matches where he started with a bye before losing by technical fall to Brayden Peet of UW-Whitewater. He went on to win against Brian Walker from Linfield University (Ore.) by a 3-1 decision and lost next round to Elijah Hunt from Concordia Moorhead by technical fall.

Cyprian Jr. will head to the NCAA Division III Championship on March 15-16 hosted by UW-La Crosse. Matches are scheduled to being at 11 a.m. both days.
