Titans Pull Away To Defeat Blugolds

UW-Oshkosh won the last four bouts, including a pin by Preston Morgan at 174 pounds, to pull away and defeat the UW-Eau Claire wrestling team, 27-12, before 331 energetic fans Thursday (Nov. 11) in Kolf Sports Center.

The Chancellor's Cup match was tied at 12 before Morgan gave UW-Oshkosh the lead for good at 18-12 with his pin of Jared Strickler in 6:15. The pin was Morgan's third of the young 2021-22 season.

UW-Oshkosh (1-0, 1-0 WIAC) extended its lead over UW-Eau Claire (1-1, 1-1 WIAC) to 21-12 on Patrick Curran's 3-2 win over Evan Lawrence at 184 pounds. Titan Beau Yineman followed with a 7-2 victory over Sam Melton at 197 pounds before teammate Jordan Lemcke closed the match with his 4-2 sudden victory over UW-Eau Claire's Mason Hawkins at 285.

The teams rotated victories during the first six bouts of the match to reach their tie at 12.

UW-Oshkosh's Luc Valdez opened the scoring with his 5-3 sudden victory over Jack Marley at 125 pounds. The Blugolds then took a 5-3 lead in the match on Javon Taschuk's 19-4 (6:58) win over Denis Murphy at 133 pounds.

AJ Schoenfuss put the Titans back in front with his pin of Markus Brown in 76 seconds at 141 pounds before Jake Drexler cut UW-Eau Claire's deficit to 9-8 with his 8-1 decision over Brandon Lenczner at 149.

UW-Oshkosh increased its advantage in the team scoring to 12-8 on Nate Stokhaug's 5-3 victory over Adam Rients at 157 pounds. The Blugolds tied the score at 12 in the next bout as Chase Schmidt defeated Muzi Sitshela, 19-7.

The match also featured 13 bouts that were not included in the dual meet scoring. UW-Oshkosh won four of those contests, including a pair of pins by Issac Ortegon at 149 pounds. Ortegon stuck Blugolds Colton Sund and Wesley Girardi to the mat in 6:19 and 2:46, respectively.

Other winners for the Titans were Matt Joyce and Cade Schmitz, both at 141 pounds. Joyce defeated Luke Krier, 10-4, while Schmitz ousted TY Peterson, 8-0.

UW-Oshkosh will compete at the Adrian College Duals Saturday (Nov. 13) in Adrian, Mich.
