Titans Have Eight Place Winners At Pointer Open

UW-Oshkosh opened its 2017-18 season with six wrestlers, including 165-pound champion Husam Alabed, earning top-three finishes at UW-Stevens Point's Pointer Open on Saturday (Nov. 4).

The non-scoring event featured participants from 16 collegiate programs, including NCAA Division I University of Wisconsin, NCAA Division II UW-Parkside and UW-Oshkosh's NCAA Division III rivals Augsburg College (Minn.), Elmhurst College (Ill.), UW-Stevens Point, UW-Whitewater and Wheaton College (Ill.).

Alabed won his 165-pound weight class with the help of injury defaults to UW-Stevens Point's Jaden Boivin in the semifinal and Jordan Weinzetl in the final. Alabed won the first of his three decisions with a pin over UW-Stevens Point's Tanner Goddard in 2:08.

Also appearing in the championship match of their weight class were AJ Stengel at 174 pounds and Colten Cashmore at 184. Both wrestlers compiled 2-1 record, including a pin.

Cashmore opened with a 9-5 win over Concordia University Wisconsin's Merrick O'Donnell before gluing UW-Stevens Point's Cody Nielsen to the surface in 4:02. In the title bout, UW-Parkside's Connor Price edged Cashmore by a 3-2 score.

Taking third place for the Titans were Wesam Alabed at 141 pounds, Jordan Lemcke at 197 and Michael Dunlap at 285.

Alabed then advanced to the third-place match with victories of 15-6 over UW-Stevens Point's Anthony Kanable and 6-4 over unattached Chad Bartschenfeld.

Lemcke split his four round-robin decisions, including a 16-0 win over UW-Oshkosh teammate John DePersia and a 2-0 sudden victory over unattached Patrick Reilly. Lemcke lost results of 7-3 to Concordia University Wisconsin's Mitchell Slatton and 10-2 to UW-Stevens Point's Dylan Diebitz.
