Defending WIAC Champion Warhawks Overpower Titans

Four pins and a pair of technical falls led the nationally ranked UW-Whitewater wrestling team to a 41-6 victory over UW-Oshkosh on Thursday (Jan. 12) in Kolf Sports Center.

UW-Whitewater, ranked 12th in the NCAA Division III by the National Wrestling Coaches Association, opened the match with 19 straight points before UW-Oshkosh's Mark Choinski defeated the Warhawks' Austin Quartullo, 3-1, in their 157-pound contest.

The Warhawks (7-5, 3-1 WIAC) then rattled off 22 straight points, including three consecutive pins, before the Titans' Elijah Burdick closed the match with a 3-0 victory over UW-Whitewater's Jordan Festge in their 285-pound bout.

UW-Whitewater, the five-time defending WIAC champion, received pins from Devin Tortorice at 141 pounds, Nicholas Bonomo at 174, Jordan Newman at 184 and Riley Kauzlaric at 197.

Tortorice stuck UW-Oshkosh's Jeremiah Recinos to the mat in 4:13 while Bonomo glued Colten Cashmore to the surface in 1:42. Newman pinned Julius Smith while Kauzlaric pinned John DePersia in times of 1:23 and 4:08, respectively.

UW-Whitewater began the match with its two wins by a technical fall. Zac Denny defeated UW-Oshkosh's Ethan Altabet, 21-5 (6:42), in their 125-pound contest while Joseph Brodman ousted the Titans' Jonathan Flores, 19-3 (5:57), in their 133-pound bout.

The Warhawks also received wins from Adam Becker at 149 pounds and Nate Mlodzik at 165. Becker doubled up Joe Pelkey, 10-5, while Mlodzik outscored Aristide Serrano, 11-2.

UW-Oshkosh (2-11, 1-3 WIAC) is off until it wrestles at UW-La Crosse on Jan. 20.
