Titans Rally To Edge Blugolds

Mark Choinski recorded the only pin fall of the night, propelling UW-Oshkosh to an 18-16 comeback win over UW-Eau Claire in the WIAC wrestling opener on Tuesday (Nov. 15) in Kolf Sports Center.

The Titans erased a 10-0 deficit by winning five of the last seven matches.

UW-Oshkosh (2-0, 1-0 WIAC) has defeated UW-Eau Claire (3-1, 0-1) in 10 of the last 12 meetings. The Blugolds had won their last two matches against the Titans, including a 30-11 victory last season in Eau Claire.

Choinski provided the Titans six crucial points as he glued Connor Hansen's shoulders to the mat just 65 seconds into their bout in the 157-pound weight class. Choinski's pin, his second in two matches this season, brought the Titans within one point of the Blugolds at 10-9.

UW-Oshkosh regained the lead for good at 15-13 after Patrick Reilly defeated Travis Cripe, 4-2, in the 184-pound division. Reilly and Cripe were tied until the end of the third period, when Reilly reversed Cripe to pick up the deciding two points.

UW-Eau Claire's Zachary Sirny started the meet with an 11-4 decision over Ethan Altabet in the 125-pound weight class to stake the Blugolds to a 3-0 lead.

The Blugolds' Cody Vogel defeated Anthony Senthavisouk, 13-5, at 133 pounds before Jordan Meyer outscored UW-Oshkosh's Dellas Vandenberg, 17-10, to extend the UW-Eau Claire lead to 10-0.

The Titans got their first points when Joe Pelkey eked past Carter Focht by the total riding-time tiebreaker at 149 pounds. Pelkey had knotted score at 1 with an escape late in the bout.

Aristide Serrano put UW-Oshkosh ahead for the first time at 12-10 after downing Toby Mosley by a 3-1 count with a takedown at the buzzer in the 165-pound weight class.

The Blugolds then took a 13-12 advantage as Tyler Vogt defeated Zach Frassetto, 7-1, at 174 pounds.

John DePersia provided the Titans with an 18-13 cushion after his 8-3 decision over Cecil Philson at 197 pounds, and UW-Oshkosh's Michael Dunlap clinched the Titan win despite suffering a 2-0 setback to Justin Karkula in the 285-pound bout.

UW-Oshkosh travels to Mequon on Saturday (Nov. 19) for the Concordia University Wisconsin Open.
