Titans Reel In Muskies For Season-Opening Win

UW-Oshkosh opened its 2016-17 wrestling season with a 39-13 victory over Lakeland University on Friday (Nov. 4) at the KI Convention Center in Green Bay.

Pins by Patrick Reilly, John DePersia, Ethan Altabet and Mark Choinski led UW-Oshkosh to the victory as the Titans totaled 24 points with their four results.

Reilly earned UW-Oshkosh's first pin of the season by sticking Mason Lind to the mat in 4:55 during their 184-pound contest.

DePersia, competing at 197 pounds, followed Reilly's pin with one of his own, gluing Jesus Guzman to the surface in 2:39.

Altabet needed just 21 seconds to pin Alemayehu Lehman during their 125-pound contest while Choinski ended his match with a pin of Marcus McCauley in 3:19 at 157 pounds.

Lakeland University (0-1) jumped to a 7-0 lead over UW-Oshkosh (1-0) behind victories from Anthony Chiarello at 165 pounds and Mitchell Fucile at 174. Chiarello defeated the Titans' Aristide Serrano, 15-2, while Fucile ousted Zach Frassetto, 8-2.

Pins by Reilly and DePersia gave UW-Oshkosh a 12-7 lead, but a forfeit to Lakeland University's Ronnie Balazs at 285 pounds put the Muskies back in front, 13-12.

UW-Oshkosh took the lead for good at 18-13 with Altabet's pin of Lehman and extended its advantage to 21-13 with Anthony Senthavisouk's 6-5 overtime win over Jimmy Spencer at 133 pounds.

Titans Dellas Vandenberg and Joe Pelkey then received forfeits at 141 and 149 pounds, respectively, before Choinski closed the event with his pin of McCauley.

UW-Oshkosh returns to the mat with activity at the UW-Stevens Point Open on Saturday (Nov. 5).
