Titans Place Fifth at MSOE Invitational

Mark Choinski and Joe Pelkey advanced to the championship round as the UW-Oshkosh wrestling team finished fifth at the Milwaukee School of Engineering Invitational held Saturday (Dec. 5) in Milwaukee.

Central College (Iowa) won the 11-team meet with 154.5 points, while UW-Platteville finished second with 116.5, Millikin University (Ill.) third with 115.5, Hannibal-La Grange University (Mo.) fourth with 62 and UW-Oshkosh fifth with 59. Concordia University Chicago (Ill.) placed sixth with 54 points.

Choinski compiled a 3-1 record as the runner-up in the 157-pound weight class. Following a first-round bye, Choinski pinned Josh Sincoff of Millikin University in 2:34 before defeating Mike O'Connor of Central College, 7-2, and Zach Nelson of Millikin University, 9-3. Choinski lost his title match by a 5-2 score to Blake Tisza of Millikin University.

Pelkey won three of his four contests en route to a second-place finish in the 149-pound weight division. Pelkey pinned Kerin Ramirez of Millikin University in 5:32 before ousting Bryant Ridgeway of St. Olaf College (Minn.), 7-1, and UW-Oshkosh teammate Hunter Mulock, 1-0. Pelkey lost his championship bout by a 10-0 result to Mason Bohm of UW-Platteville.

UW-Oshkosh received a pair of fourth-place finishes from Dellas Vandenberg at 133 pounds and Austin Loos at 141.

Vandenberg tallied a 2-2 record, including a 9-1 loss to Aaron Anderson of Central College in his third-place contest. Following a first-round bye, Vandenberg edged Anderson, 1-0 (tiebreaker), before being pinned by Chris Williams of Millikin University in 2:43. Vandenberg wrestled for third place after winning a 14-12 sudden victory over Bryce Fitzgerald of Milwaukee School of Engineering.

Loos posted a 2-2 record after losing a 10-2 decision to Jahleel Vester of Central College in his third-place match. Following a first-round bye, Loos lost a 5-0 result to Vester. After another bye, Loos marked wins of 5-1 over Jadin Taylor of Hannibal-La Grange University and 4-0 over Devin Dilley of Central College.

Other place winners for the Titans were Mulock at 149 pounds and Patrick Reilly at 165.

Mulock went 3-2 in the tournament and earned fifth place with his 7-1 victory over Miguel Betancourt of Concordia University Chicago. Reilly finished sixth, but had to forfeit his last two matches due to an injury suffered in the semifinal round. Reilly concluded the tournament with a 2-2 record.

UW-Oshkosh also received records of 0-2 from Jonathan Flores at 125 pounds, 0-2 from Corey Knudsen at 149, 1-2 from Nathan Zemke at 149, 0-2 from Nate Arquinego at 157, 1-2 from Julius Smith at 174, 1-2 from John DePersia at 184, 0-2 from Chris Yaros at 197 and 0-2 from Cole Ryan at 285.

UW-Oshkosh wrestles Lakeland College and Concordia University Wisconsin next Saturday (Dec. 12) in Stevens Point.
