Titans Earn Four Fifth-Place NCAA Regional Finishes

The UW-Oshkosh wrestling team had four fifth-place finishers at the NCAA Division III West Regional held Saturday (Feb. 28) in Minneapolis, Minn.

Although the Titans failed to advance a wrestler for the NCAA Division III Championship on March 13-14 in Hershey, Pa., Cory Wilson at 125 pounds, Craig Mason at141, Hunter Mulock at 149 and Korey Kleinhans at 184 all won their final match of the regional to take fifth place.

Wilson went 2-2 in the tournament, including a loss on a pin in 3:54 to eventual champion Mike Fuenffinger of Augsburg College (Minn.) in his first bout. Wilson then defeated Scott Worlund of UW-Eau Claire, 3-2, before losing an 8-1 decision to Jakob Stageberg of Concordia-Moorhead College (Minn.). Wilson earned fifth place after Tevin Zavadil of St. John's University (Minn.) withdrew from the regional due to an injury.

Mason split his four contests and pinned Shawn Speer of Pacific University (Ore.) in 4:15 to take fifth place. Mason opened with a 6-2 win over Joshua Curcio of Concordia University Wisconsin before losing 9-3 to eventual champion Jacoby Bergeron of Concordia-Moorhead College and 19-4 to Marcus Hamer of Augsburg College (Minn.).

Mulock won three of his five bouts, including a narrow 5-4 decision over Keith Thomas of Pacific University in the fifth-place match. Mulock started strong by posting victories of 3-1 over Mat Gonzalez of Lakeland College and 8-6 over Quentin Lueck of Concordia University Wisconsin. Mulock then lost consecutive results of 8-0 to Mason Bohm of UW-Platteville and 17-0 to Jake Kostik of Concordia-Moorhead College.

Kleinhans edged Dane Ringquist of Concordia-Moorhead College, 3-2, in his fifth-place match to conclude activity with a 2-2 record. Kleinhans defeated Matt Rieckhoff of UW-Eau Claire, 12-5, in his opening contest before being pinned in 6:43 by eventual champion Tom Teigen of Augsburg College and losing a 10-6 decision to Mitchell Slatton of Concordia University Wisconsin.

UW-Oshkosh's Alan Dahlke took sixth place at 197 pounds with a 2-3 record. Dahlke lost twice to Jake Reuteler of Concordia University of Wisconsin, 2-1 in his opening bout and 5-3 in his fifth-place match.

The Titans' Joe Pelkey went 1-2 at 157 pounds, including a pin of Milwaukee School of Engineering's TreJon House in 48 seconds.

Jonathan Flores at 133 pounds, Michael Berg at 174 and Matt Veneskey at 285 all went winless for UW-Oshkosh in two decisions.

UW-Oshkosh placed sixth in the team standings with 47 points. Host Augsburg College won the 11-team meet with 179 points, while Concordia-Moorhead College finished second with 143.5, St. John's University and UW-Platteville third with 74.5 and Concordia University Wisconsin fifth with 65.5.
