Mason Leads Titans At Pete Willson Invitational

Craig Mason won five matches in the 141-pound weight class to finish sixth and help the UW-Oshkosh wrestling team earn 17.5 points at the Pete Willson Invitational held Friday and Saturday (Jan. 30-31) in Wheaton, Ill.

UW-Oshkosh finished 24th among the 32 competing teams with 17.5 points. Defending champion UW-Whitewater, the second-ranked team in the NCAA Division III by the National Wrestling Coaches Association, took first place with 173 points.

Rounding out the top five teams were second-place and ninth-ranked Messiah College (Pa.) with 134.5 points, third-place and seventh-ranked University of Mount Union (Ohio) with 98, fourth-place and 12th-ranked Alma College (Mich.) with 91.5 and fifth-place Ohio Northern University with 82.

Mason won five of his first six matches before suffering a 10-4 loss to Layten Binion of North Central College (Ill.). He then lost a 12-3 decision to UW-Parkside's Adam Yde in the fifth-place contest.

Mason recorded a 3-2 victory over Chad Lammer of Elizabethtown College (Pa.) in his opening bout. He then dropped a 4-1 result to Binion in the second round.

Mason remained alive in the tournament by rolling up four straight wins. The streak started with 3-2 victories over Josh Juarez of Manchester University (Ind.) and Justin Kihn of Heidelberg University (Ohio) and a forfeit from Jared Kust of UW-Stevens Point. Mason wrapped up his string of victories with a 2-0 win over Aaron Gessic of Case Western Reserve University (Ohio).

Korey Kleinhans and Alan Dahlke both posted 2-2 records for the Titans.

Kleinhans opened activity in the 184-pound division with a 21-4 loss to Rich Dowdley of Heidelberg University. He then marked wins of 12-3 over Ben Farmer of Wabash College (Ind.) and 9-2 over Danny McNamara of John Carroll University (Ohio) before losing 17-1 to UW-Whitewater's Ryan Aprahamian.

Dahlke won his first match in the 197-pound category with a 3-1 victory over Filiberto Diaz-Duran of North Central College. He then lost a 9-5 decision to Brett Thumm of Wabash College before defeating UW-Whitewater's Kane Seubert, 7-4. Kleinhans was eliminated from the tournament with his 10-1 loss to Milwaukee School of Engineering's Devin Mahnke.

The Titans also had Jonathan Flores and Derek Hermanson post 1-2 records at 133 and 157 pounds, respectively. Going winless in two contests were Brendan Gaynor at 149 pounds and Matt Veneskey at 285.

UW-Oshkosh wrestles in a dual meet at the Milwaukee School of Engineering on Thursday (Feb. 5).
