Pioneers Take Down Titans

Consecutive pins by Aaric Spencer and Cody Meyer helped UW-Platteville pull away and defeat the UW-Oshkosh wrestling team, 29-13, on Thursday (Jan. 8) in Kolf Sports Center.

UW-Platteville (1-4, 1-4 WIAC) trailed 10-7 before the 165-pound Spencer stuck Derek Hermanson to the mat in 49 seconds. The 174-pound Meyer followed with a pin of Michael Berg in 6:47.

The Pioneers extended their lead to 23-10 with Trent Larson's 9-0 win over Korey Kleinhans at 184 pounds.

UW-Oshkosh (1-2, 1-1 WIAC) made the score 23-13 with Alan Dahlke's 3-1 victory over Josh Cannon at 197 pounds. UW-Platteville's Brandon Boyle then ended the match with his pin of Matt Veneskey in 2:43 at 285 pounds.

UW-Platteville opened the contest with victories by Zach Strenger at 125 pounds and Cole Ferguson at 133. Strenger defeated Rashaam Hill, 15-4, while Ferguson edged Jonathan Flores, 2-0.

UW-Oshkosh then went on a streak of its own by winning the next three bouts to take a 10-7 lead.

Craig Mason started the Titans' run with his 11-2 victory over Jeremy Peterson at 141 pounds. Joe Pelkey followed with a 4-2 win over Chase Wiggins at 149 pounds before Hunter Mulock defeated Isaac Brosinski by a 3-1 score at 157.

UW-Oshkosh wrestles Saturday (Jan. 10) at the Pat Flanagan Open in Dubuque, Iowa.
