Kulchytskyy First, Schiferl Third At Pete Willson Invitational

Nazar Kulchytskyy (Jr. • Sosnivka, Ukraine) took first place at 165 pounds and Dan Schiferl (Jr. • Stoughton) third at 174 to lead UW-Oshkosh at the Pete Willson Wrestling Invitational held Friday and Saturday (Feb. 1-2) in Wheaton, Ill.

Kulchytskyy, who captured the 157-pound title at last year's NCAA Division III Championship, went unbeaten in four contests to raise his season record to 32-1 (19 pins). He registered a 12-3 victory over Nick Fishback of UW-Parkside in the championship match.

En route to the title bout, Kulchytskyy pinned Brian Snyder of Case Western Reserve University (Ohio) in 50 seconds, scored a 26-10 win over Ethan Farmer of Wabash College (Ind.) and pinned Yousef Al-Ghoul of Elmhurst College (Ill.) in 2:10. Kulchytskyy's career record now stands at 89-3 (43 pins).

Schiferl, who finished ninth in the 174-pound weight class at last year's NCAA Division III Championship, won five of his six contests and grabbed third place with a 6-2 victory over Ryan Pieper of Trine University (Ind.).

Schiferl pinned Kyle Geary of North Central College (Ill.) in 6:25 and Jeremy Stepp of Heidelberg University (Ohio) in 2:43 before marking a 10-5 triumph over Josh Anthony of UW-Parkside. He then lost a 15-0 decision to defending national champion Kyle Kwiat of Ohio Northern University before pinning Stepp in 4:46. Schiferl owns a season record of 11-4 (8 pins) and a career mark of 51-32 (21 pins).

Three Titans, Tom Dahlke (So. • Shiocton) at 157 pounds, Jay Howarth (So. • Coleman) at 184 and James Hawley (So. • Campbellsport) at 285, split their four contests. Howarth's performance included a pin in 4:22 of the University of Mount Union's (Ohio) Brian Deming.

UW-Oshkosh also had David Rosenau (Sr. • Van Dyne) go 1-2 at 133 pounds and Mason McMullen (Jr. • Milwaukee) 0-2 at 149.

NCAA Division II UW-Parkside won the 29-team meet with 151.5 points. Messiah College (Pa.), ranked 16th in the NCAA Division III by the National Wrestling Coaches Association, took second with 105 points, fifth-ranked UW-La Crosse third with 87, fourth-ranked UW-Whitewater fourth with 84.5 and ninth-ranked Olivet College (Mich.) fifth with 76. UW-Oshkosh finished 13th with 52 points.

UW-Oshkosh's next competition is at the WIAC Championship on Feb. 17 in Eau Claire.
