Titans Split Dual Meets With Johnnies, Falcons

Brandon Clapper (So. • Plainfield) and Nazar Kulchytskyy (Jr. • Sosnivka, Ukraine) defeated both of their opponents as the UW-Oshkosh wrestling team split matches with St. John's University (Minn.) and Concordia University Wisconsin on Saturday (Jan. 12) in Mequon.

UW-Oshkosh (4-5) dropped a 32-11 decision to St. John's University before ousting Concordia University Wisconsin, 32-13. St. John's University entered the match ranked 29th in the NCAA Division III by the National Wrestling Coaches Association.

In the loss to St. John's University, Clapper and Kulchytskyy accounted for all of UW-Oshkosh's team points. Clapper pinned John Scepaniak in 6:38 at 285 pounds while Kulchytskyy outscored Nick Schuler by a 26-10 count at 165.

The Titans lost a pair of two-point decisions to the Johnnies as Parker Peterson (Jr. • Eden) and David Rosenau (Sr. • Van Dyne) suffered setbacks of 4-2 and 7-5, respectively. Sam Roundtree defeated Peterson at 125 pounds, while Mike Pleski beat Rosenau at 133.

Other close defeats went to UW-Oshkosh's Mason McMullen (Jr. • Milwaukee) at 149 pounds and Tom Dahlke (So. • Shiocton) at 157. Cody Goldschmidt posted a 6-1 win over McMullen, while Chris Stevermer earned an 11-5 victory over Dahlke.

UW-Oshkosh owned the winner in seven of the 10 weight classes against Concordia University Wisconsin. Jay Howarth (So. • Coleman) recorded the only pin for the Titans as he stuck 184-pounder Mason Baumgartner to the mat in 4:42.

The Titans had three wrestlers win by 10 or more points. Dahlke blanked David Tuomi, 16-0, at 157 pounds, while Kulchytskky clobbered Shawn Flom, 23-7, at 165. McMullen tallied a 15-5 victory over Ricky Burns at 149 pounds.

Other UW-Oshkosh winners were Clapper at 285 pounds and Korey Kleinhans (So. • Oconomowoc) at 197. Clapper defeated Seth Kilkelly, 6-2, while Kleinhans outscored Jake Reuteler, 18-16. The Titans' Justin Schienebeck (Sr. • Butternut) received a forfeit victory at 141 pounds.

The closest UW-Oshkosh loss came at 133 pounds, where the Falcons' Kevin Ambrocio topped Rosenau, 8-2.

UW-Oshkosh competes next Saturday (Jan. 19) at the Matman Invitational in Mount Vernon, Iowa.
