Pointers Run Away From Titans In WIAC Opener

UW-Stevens Point won eight of the first nine contests as it defeated the UW-Oshkosh wrestling team, 32-10, on Tuesday (Nov. 27) in Stevens Point.

The ninth-ranked Pointers jumped to an 11-0 lead before UW-Oshkosh's Nazar Kulchytskyy (Jr. • Sosnivka, Ukraine) won his 165-pound match with a pin of Dan Irwin in 1:35.

UW-Stevens Point (3-0, 2-0 WIAC) then reeled off five more victories before the Titans' Hunter Mulock (Fr. • Baraboo) took his 133-pound bout with an 8-0 win over Ryan Osse.

UW-Stevens Point opened the match with wins by Jordan Kust at 141 pounds, Shane Sweeney at 149 and Ben Strobel at 157. Kust posted a 9-1 victory over Justin Schienebeck (Sr. • Butternut) while Sweeney marked a 7-4 triumph over Mason McMullen (Jr. • Milwaukee). Strobel tallied a 12-3 win over Tom Dahlke (So. • Shiocton).

Following Ryan Conat's 2-0 win over Dan Schiferl (Jr. • Stoughton) at 174 pounds and Andy Borchardt's 11-8 victory over Jay Howarth (So. • Coleman) at 184, UW-Stevens Point increased its lead to 29-6 on consecutive pins by Dustin Wozniak and Matt Cuadra. Wozniak ended his 197-pound match with Tyler Wetenkamp (So. • Manitowoc) in 1:45, while Cuadra finished his 285-pound bout with James Hawley (So. • Campbellsport) in 1:40.

UW-Stevens Point's eighth and final win belonged to Lance Fabry at 125 pounds. He won the contest by a 7-3 score over Parker Peterson (Jr. • Eden).

UW-Oshkosh (0-1, 0-1 WIAC) competes at the Milwaukee School of Engineering Invitational on Saturday (Dec. 1).
