Mueller Receives WIAC Scholar-Athlete Award

With exceptional performance in the classroom and on the mat, UW-Oshkosh's Zachary Mueller (Sr. • Jackson) has been named the 2012 winner of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference's (WIAC) Max Sparger Wrestling Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award.

Mueller owns a 3.72 cumulative grade point average as a major in secondary education. He is a two-time member of both the National Wrestling Coaches Association's All-Academic Team and the WIAC's Honor Roll. Mueller has been selected to UW-Oshkosh's Dean's List and Honor Roll.

In competition this year, Mueller owns a 32-7 record with four pins. He also finished second in the 125-pound weight class at the WIAC Championship held Feb. 26 in Whitewater. Mueller is among four wrestlers that will represent UW-Oshkosh at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Championship on March 9-10 in La Crosse.

Last season, Mueller posted a 23-11 record and finished fifth at the WIAC Championship. In 2010, he compiled a 24-16 record, placed third at the WIAC Championship and qualified for the NCAA Division III Championship. Mueller tallied a 16-13 record and finished fourth at the WIAC Championship in 2009. Mueller, who serves as the captain of this year's UW-Oshkosh team, boasts a career record of 95-47 with 19 pins.

The only other UW-Oshkosh wrestler to earn the Max Sparger Scholar-Athlete honor was Jeff Matczak in 1991.
