Engelland Second, Mueller Third At WIAC Championship
Sam Engelland (So. • Neenah) placed second in the 174-pound weight class for the second consecutive year to lead all UW-Oshkosh performances at the WIAC Wrestling Championship held Sunday (Feb. 21) in Stevens Point.
Engelland posted a 2-1 record in the tournament, with his lone
loss being an 8-0 setback to Mike Schmitz of UW-La Crosse in the
title contest. Engelland advanced to the championship bout by
recording wins of 16-0 over Keith Dawson of UW-Eau Claire and 6-3
over Chris Karl of UW-Stevens Point.
UW-Oshkosh's Zachary Mueller (So. • Jackson) placed third in
the 125-pound weight division after finishing fourth in the same
category a year ago. Mueller tallied a 2-2 record, including an
11-8 loss to Joe Mileski of UW-Stevens Point in the true
second-place match. Mueller followed an 10-8 loss to eventual
champion Albie McKinney of UW-La Crosse with wins of 18-0 over
Jonathan Bernstein of UW-Eau Claire and 11-7 over Allen Fish of
UW-Platteville.
Earning fourth-place finishes for the Titans were Jose Quintana
(So. • Burnsville, Minn.) at 149 pounds, Dan Schiferl (Fr.
• Stoughton) at 157 and Aaron Erickson (So. • Merrill) at
184.
Quintana compiled a 2-2 record, highlighted by a pin in 2:20
over Spencer Peterson of UW-Platteville. He also registered a 14-11
victory over Andy Johnston of UW-Eau Claire. Quintana lost 8-0 to
Kris Magruder of UW-Stevens Point and on a pin in 42 seconds to
Johnston.
Schiferl marked a 1-2 record, with his lone victory being a pin in
4:52 over Jon Ames of UW-Eau Claire. He lost 9-3 to Ryan Farwell of
UW-La Crosse and on a pin in 4:56 to Corey Schmidt of
UW-Whitewater.
Erickson notched a 1-2 record, including a pair of losses to David
Casper of UW-Whitewater. Casper defeated Erickson, 12-4, and on a
pin in 1:24. Erickson's only victory was a 13-10 triumph over Matt
Scott of UW-Platteville.
UW-Oshkosh received fifth-place efforts from Kyle Kleuskens (Jr.
• Freedom) at 133 pounds, Carl DeLuca (So. • Wisconsin
Rapids) at 141, James Dederich (Jr. • Menomonee Falls) at 165
and Ryan Heath (So. • Merrill) at 197. All three wrestlers
went 1-2 in the tournament.
The Titans' Ian Sauer (Sr. • Brodhead) lost all three of his
matches and finished sixth at 285 pounds.
UW-La Crosse scored 154 points to capture its 13th consecutive
WIAC title and 14th overall. UW-Whitewater finished second in the
six-team meet with 118 points, while UW-Stevens Point placed third
with 117, UW-Platteville fourth with 105.5, UW-Oshkosh fifth with
90.5 and UW-Eau Claire sixth with 63.
Other winners in their weight class were Bebeto Yewah of UW-La
Crosse at 133 pounds, Austin Bautista of UW-Whitewater at 141, Matt
Mauseth of UW-La Crosse at 149, Jesse Milks of UW-Platteville at
157, Cory Ferguson of UW-La Crosse at 165, Ben Engelland of
UW-Stevens Point at 184, Andy Moore of UW-La Crosse at 197 and Dan
Laurent of UW-La Crosse at 285. Wozniak was named the meet's
outstanding wrestler.
UW-La Crosse swept three additional awards as Dave Malecek was
named the Mertz Mortorelli Coach of the Year, Laurent the Max
Sparger Scholar-Athlete of the Year and McKinney the meet's
outstanding wrestler.
Named to the WIAC's All-Sportsmanship Team were Joe Pitsch of
UW-Eau Claire, Farwell of UW-La Crosse, DeLuca of UW-Oshkosh, Andy
Casper of UW-Platteville, Nick Estep of UW-Stevens Point and Matt
Schuck of UW-Whitewater.
Each of the 10 individual champions, along with nine at-large
selections, will represent the WIAC at the NCAA Division III
Championship on March 5-6 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The nine at-large
selections were Johnston of UW-Eau Claire, Engelland and Mueller of
UW-Oshkosh, Vinny Alber (165 pounds) of UW-Platteville, Karl,
Mileski and Jordan Schulte (165 pounds) of UW-Stevens Point and
Adam Latella (197 pounds) and Jon Schmidt (285 pounds) of
UW-Whitewater.
