UW-Whitewater aims for a third consecutive title when it competes at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Women's Gymnastics Championship on Friday (March 3) in Eau Claire. The 39th edition of the league championship begins at 4 p.m. in UW-Eau Claire's McPhee Physical Education Center.

UW-Whitewater claimed its second championship in program history last season with 189.275 points. UW-La Crosse finished second with 186.325 points, UW-Stout third with 184.15, Winona State University (Minn.) fourth with 183.95 and Hamline University (Minn.) fifth with 182.775. UW-Oshkosh, which has won the meet 14 times, placed seventh with 181.575 points.

The conference meet also serves as the West Region qualifier for the National Collegiate Gymnastics Association (NCGA) Championship. That meet will be held March 23-24 in Brockport, N.Y. The top three teams from the West Regional, along with several qualified gymnasts, will advance to the NCGA Championship.

This year's WIAC Championship features two individuals who are striving to earn a second league title. Winona State University 's Jena Jondahl was victorious on the vault at last year's meet, while UW-Eau Claire's Danielle Schulzetenberg claimed the balance beam at the 2010 event.

The top six finishers in each event at the league championship earn all-conference accolades.

Four teams are ranked among the top 10 in the country based on the GymInfo rankings distributed Feb. 27. UW-La Crosse is ranked sixth, while UW-Whitewater is listed eighth, Winona State University ninth and UW-Stout 10th.

This year's WIAC Championship features student-athletes from an astonishing 27 different states and one from Quebec, Canada.
