Titans Take Sixth In WIAC Championship

REEDSBURG, Wis.- The UW-Oshkosh women's golf team held steady at sixth after all three days (Oct. 6-8) of competition at the 2023 WIAC Championship (presented by Culver's).

The Titans, who returned eight of the 10 golfers that competed at the 2022 championship, finished in sixth with 1,058 total strokes, two places better than last season's finish. The four-time conference champions shot a combined 355 strokes on Friday, 357 on Saturday and 346 on Sunday.

Ava Downie (Sr. • Hortonville) finished her fourth league tournament with a career-best 11th place mark with 248 total strokes (32-over par). She registered 82, 81 and 85 strokes in each day of the 54-hole meet with two birdies and 22 pars. Previous finishes for Downie include; 25th at the 2022 championship, 35th at the 2021 championship and 52nd at the 2020 championship (moved to the spring of 2021 due to the novel coronavirus pandemic).

Hailey Matenaer (So. • West Bend), Sydney Bornhorst (Jr. • Grayslake, Ill.), Kyle Herrin (So. • Orland Park, Ill.) and Taryn Endres (So. • DeForest) also finished in the top 50 of the 66-golfer field. Matenaer shot 259 (43-over par) for 24th place, Bornhorst 267 (51-over par) for 42nd, Herrin 269 (53-over par) for 44th and Endres 271 (55-over par) for 45th.

Also golfing for UW-Oshkosh were Josie Hofer (Jr. • Menominee, Mich.), Alyssa Dreher (Sr. • Campbellsport) and Sophia Steel (So. • Hoffman Estates, Ill.). Hofer finished 52nd with 275 total strokes (59-over par), Dreher 57th with 281 (65-over par) and Steel 66th with 309 (93-over par).

Abbey Filipiak of UW-Stout registered 225 total strokes (nine-over par) for her second individual WIAC title. She also earned the 2021 crown, shooting 230 strokes (14-over par).

UW-Whitewater claimed its seventh consecutive league title and ninth overall on Sunday after accumulating 959 total strokes (95-over par). The Warhawks earned the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship to be held at Keene Trace Golf Club in Nicholasville, Ky. from May 21-24, 2024.

UW-La Crosse took second in the 28th WIAC Championship with 977 total strokes while UW-Stout took third with 978, UW-Platteville took fourth with 1,025 and UW-Stevens Point took fifth with 1,046. After the Titans' sixth place 1,058 stroke finish, UW-Eau Claire followed with 1,065 for seventh and UW-River Falls took eighth with 1,078.

Dreher was UW-Oshkosh's member of the WIAC All-Sportsmanship Team.
