Titans To Compete In 28th WIAC Championship

OSHKOSH, Wis.- The UW-Oshkosh women's golf team will head to Reedsburg this weekend for the 28th edition of the WIAC Championships (Presented by Culver's).

The 2023 WIAC Championship begins at 11 a.m. Friday (Oct. 6) with a shotgun start and continues with flighted tee times starting at 8:30 a.m. both Saturday and Sunday (Oct.7-8) at the Reedsburg Country Club.

The league automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship will be awarded to the team that wins this weekend's 54-hole league championship. The national championship meet is set to be held in Nicholasville, Ky at the Keene Trace Golf Club.

The top 10 finishers at this year's championship will claim All-Conference recognition with the top five securing first team honors and places six thru 10 earning second team status. The first-place finisher will be named the WIAC Player of the Year, while Newcomer of the Year honors will be awarded to the highest placing newcomer. A newcomer is defined as a student-athlete who used her first season of participation in women's golf this season. Transfers are not eligible unless they didn't participate in women's golf at their previous institution.

UW-Whitewater won their sixth consecutive conference title last fall with 971 total strokes on a one-hole playoff over UW-La Crosse. It was the Warhawks' eighth title overall.

UW-La Crosse finished second last year with 971 total strokes while UW-Stout placed third with 1,002, UW-Eau Claire fourth with 1,023, UW-Stevens Point fifth with 1,033, UW-River Falls sixth with 1,043, UW-Platteville seventh with 1,051 and UW-Oshkosh eighth with 1,067.

UW-Eau Claire owns nine league titles, followed by UW-Whitewater with eight, UW-Oshkosh with four, and both UW-Stevens Point and UW-Stout with three. The Titans won their WIAC championships in the fall of 2000, 2002, 2003 and 2015.

Under the direction of head coach Tyler Cassmeyer, UW-Oshkosh competed in four tournaments this fall with a best finish of fifth coming at the UW-La Crosse Fall Invitational on Sept. 23-24.

Ava Downie, Alyssa Dreher, Kylie Hofer, Taryn Endres and Josie Hofer will make up the Titans' starting lineup for the weekend, while Hailey Matenaer, Sophia Steel and Sydney Bornhorst will compete as individuals.

Downie, a four-time competitor who finished 25th in the WIAC Championship last fall, 35th in 2021 and 52nd in the spring of 2021, has recorded a team-low 87.4 stroke average per 18 holes this season. She placed 16th at the UW-La Crosse Fall Invitational.

Herrin averages 88.0 strokes, followed by Endres (88.5), Hofer (89.2) and Dreher (89.6).
