Titans Open Season With Third-Place Finish
The long-awaited return of UW-Oshkosh women's golf took place Saturday (April 3) and the result was a third-place finish for the Titans at the Carthage College Firebird Invitational in Village of Lakewood, Ill.
UW-Oshkosh, which hadn't competed since October 6 of the 2019 WIAC Championship due to the novel coronavirus pandemic, totaled 382 strokes (94-over-par) during the 18 holes of competition at the Red Tail Run Golf Course. The Titans averaged 4.10 strokes on the Par 3 holes, 5.50 on the Par 4s and 6.60 on the Par 5s.
UW-Eau Claire won the six-team tournament with 360 strokes (72-over-par) while UW-Stout finished second with 369. UW-Stevens Point placed fourth with 391 strokes, St. Norbert College fifth with 397 and North Central College (Ill.) sixth with 398.
UW-Eau Claire's Lexi Meade and UW-Stout's Abbey Filipak shared first place among the tournament's 34 golfers with 83 strokes (11-over-par). UW-Eau Claire's Jessica Rudnicki finished third with 85 strokes, North Central College's Alex Brummer fourth with 87 and UW-Stevens Point's Bree Downie fifth with 88.
UW-Oshkosh was led by Megan Footit's sixth-place score of 89 strokes (17-over-par). Footit reached her result with the help of one birdie and five pars.
The Titans also had Margherite Pettenuzzo finish seventh with 93 strokes (21-over-par), Nikki Differt 17th with 98 (26-over-par) and Lauryn Davis and Ava Downie both 20th with 100 (28-over-par). Downie led the group with five pars while Davis and Pettenuzzo had four apiece.
UW-Oshkosh's Gwyn Golembiewski contributed a 28th-place finish of 107 strokes (35-over-par). Golembiewski's play included one birdie and three pars.
The Titans compete next Saturday (April 10) at the Marian University Invitational. The 18-hole tournament will be held at the Whispering Springs Golf Club in Fond du Lac.
