Titans To Compete At WIAC Golf Championship

UW-Oshkosh looks to improve upon last year's fourth-place finish when it competes at the 19th annual WIAC Women's Golf Championship this weekend in Nekoosa.

Individuals will play 54 holes over a period of three days at the Lake Arrowhead Golf Course, with competition beginning Friday (Oct. 3) and concluding Sunday (Oct. 5). The winner of the team title receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship on May 12-15 in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.

UW-Eau Claire won last year's title with 999 strokes. The championship was the Blugolds' fourth in five years and ninth overall. UW-Stout, which captured the title in 2012, finished second with 1,008 strokes, while UW-Whitewater place third with 1,043 and UW-Oshkosh fourth with 1,058.

Rounding out the team standings from a year ago were fifth-place UW-Stevens Point with 1,086 strokes, sixth-place UW-River Falls with 1,088 and seventh-place UW-Platteville with 1,089.

UW-Oshkosh's fourth-place finish last year was its highest since it ranked second in 2007. The Titans won WIAC titles in 2000, 2002 and 2003.

Sophomore McKenzie Paul, sophomore transfer Laura Stair and freshman Micayla Richards are expected to lead UW-Oshkosh this weekend. All three golfers rank among the conference leaders in strokes per 18 holes, with Paul averaging 81.4, Stair 86.3 and Richards 89.9.

Last year, Paul finished fourth at the WIAC Championship with 244 strokes, 25-over par. She posted daily scores of 77, 88 and 79 to share the fourth-place listing with UW-Stevens Point's McKenna Prestigiacomo. Paul's finish was the best by a Titan since Jennifer Young placed second in 2006.

UW-Oshkosh also returns sophomore Samantha Kuik and seniors Emily Mallek and Taylor Wenzel from last year's WIAC Championship. Kuik finished 38th, while Wenzel placed 43rd and Mallek 45th.

Expected to make her first appearance at the championship is UW-Oshkosh freshman Sarah Stefaniak.

UW-Eau Claire's Kate Engler is the defending WIAC champion. She won last year's title with 231 strokes, 12-over par. Also returning is UW-Stout's Brittany McNett-Emmerich, who won the individual title in 2012 and finished second to Engler last year with 240 strokes.
