Titans Finish Sixth At WIAC Championship
UW-Oshkosh moved up one position during the
final day of competition and placed sixth at the WIAC Women's Golf
Championship held Friday through Sunday (Oct. 8-10) at the Bull's
Eye Country Club in Wisconsin Rapids.
UW-Oshkosh recorded daily 18-hole scores of 389, 371 and 349 to
finish sixth in the 54-hole tournament with 1,109 strokes,
245-over-par. The Titans, who captured the last of their three WIAC
titles in 2003, were in seventh place after both the first and
second day of activity.
UW-Eau Claire won the seven-team meet with 989
strokes, 125-over-par. It was the second straight WIAC title for
the Blugolds, who also earned the league's automatic bid to the
2011 NCAA Division III Championship that will be held May 10-13 in
Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.
UW-Stevens Point finished second at this year's WIAC Championship
with 1,004 strokes, while UW-Whitewater placed third with 1,021,
UW-Platteville fourth with 1,031, UW-Stout fifth with 1,063 and
UW-River Falls seventh with 1,118. UW-Whitewater led both UW-Eau
Claire and UW-Stevens Point by nine strokes after the first day of
competition.
UW-Eau Claire owned four of the top five individual performers,
including Sara Mattes who claimed medalist honors with 242 strokes,
26-over-par. Her victory marked the eighth consecutive year that
UW-Eau Claire had the individual champion.
Danelle Olson of UW-Stevens Point and Catherine Wagner of UW-Eau
Claire tied for second place among the 51 golfers with 243 strokes,
while Maggie Lattery and Emily Swift of UW-Eau Claire tied for
fourth with 247.
UW-Oshkosh was led by Kim Sippl's (Jr. •
Omro) 16th-place finish. Sippl totaled 260 strokes on 18-hole
scores of 83, 92 and 85.
The Titans also had Alyssa Chase (So. • Sun Prairie) finish
35th with 280 strokes, Theresa Henke (Fr. • Wisconsin Rapids)
37th with 286, Sarah Sheldon (Fr. • Janesville) 41st with 287,
Amanda Bingham (So. • Mukwonago) 43rd with 298 and Coree
Georgenson (So. • Stevens Point) 46th in 305. UW-Oshkosh's
Kailee Wahler (Fr. • Twin Lakes) withdrew from the tournament
after 36 holes.
The WIAC named UW-Platteville’s Pete Reif and UW-River
Falls’ Matt Cranston as its Co-Coaches of the Year.
Selected to the WIAC's All-Sportsmanship Team were Swift of UW-Eau Claire, Bingham of UW-Oshkosh, Kerrie Liske of UW-Platteville, Kate Gjerning of UW-River Falls, Mary Welch of UW-Stevens Point, Becca Eggers of UW-Stout and Amy Peters of UW-Whitewater.
