Titans Finish Sixth At WIAC Championship

UW-Oshkosh closed its fall season with a sixth-place finish at the 54-hole WIAC Women's Golf Championship held Friday through Sunday (Oct. 9-11) at the Northern Bay Golf Resort & Marina in Arkdale.

UW-Oshkosh, which won the event in 2000, 2002 and 2003, posted daily 18-hole scores of 379, 383 and 366 to finish sixth with 1,128 total strokes, 252-over-par.

UW-Eau Claire captured the team title with 963 strokes, 87-over-par. The WIAC title was the sixth for the Blugolds, who also receive the league's automatic bid to the 2010 NCAA Division III Championship on May 11-14 in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.

UW-Whitewater placed second in the seven-team meet with 1,005 strokes, while two-time defending champion UW-Stevens Point finished third with 1,039, UW-Stout fourth with 1,059, UW-Platteville fifth with 1,077 and UW-River Falls seventh with 1,135.

Emily Wichman (Sr. • Neenah) finished as UW-Oshkosh's individual leader. She placed 16th with 259 strokes, 40-over-par. Wichman tallied daily scores of 86, 88 and 85 to record her highest ranking at the WIAC Championship.

The Titans also received a 23rd-place finish from Alyssa Chase (Fr. • Sun Prairie). Chase totaled 268 strokes, with daily scores of 92, 89 and 87.

Other UW-Oshkosh golfers at the event were Emily Clark (So. • Janesville), Coree Georgenson (Fr. • Stevens Point) and Amanda Bingham (Fr. • Mukwonago). Clark placed 41st with 300 strokes, Georgenson 42nd with 301 and Bingham 45th with 347.

UW-Eau Claire's Katie Maurer compiled 227 strokes, 8-over-par, to earn her second straight WIAC individual crown. Jessica Urban of UW-Stevens Point finished second with 233 strokes, while Sara Mattes and Catherine Wagner of UW-Eau Claire tied for third with 241. Chelsea Davis of UW-Whitewater finished fifth among the 45 golfers with 245 strokes.

The WIAC named UW-Stevens Point's Urban as its Golfer of the Year and UW-Stout's Howie Samb as its Coach of the Year.

Named to the WIAC's All-Sportsmanship Team were Katie Swift of UW-Eau Claire, Wichman of UW-Oshkosh, Tricia Pawelski of UW-Platteville, Kelly Gordh of UW-River Falls, Urban of UW-Stevens Point, Kelsey Treptow of UW-Stout and Lindsay Porter of UW-Whitewater.
